5-at-10: True or False Tuesday with kickoffs, Golf Contest scores, ACC Network and the GOP convention

OK gang, we are feet in the sand and hand in the Yeti here on the panhandle. Good times.

As is customary, we will do an abbreviated 5-at-10 each day this week, because, well that's what we do. If it's a Monday-through-Friday, we do a 5-at-10 or you get your membership dues back.

So let's answer five quick true-or-false questions on a True-or-False Tuesday. Deal? Deal.

1. True or False: We should be embarrassed by our performance - or lack there of - in the first annual Doubly Major Challenge. Answer: True.

Here are the scores, and much thanks to Billy-in-Brainerd for sacrificing himself to save the humbled host the scorn of being the cellar dweller. (There were a few who had multiple players who missed the cut, so if something crazy happens at the PGA in 10 days and we need to refigure, we can. But for those, the first leg appears to be broken. As always, if you see a discrepancy, please let us know.)

2. True or false, 16-year-old Travis Vick would get into your pocket pretty quickly on the golf course. Answer: True.

As TFP ace sports columnist Mark Wiedmer skillfully tells us here, Vick set the course record at The Honors on Monday. Here's betting the USGA sets it with a few more challenges today. Either way, Vick certainly impressed.

3. True or false, it's a good idea to eliminate kickoffs, like the Big 12 is contemplating. Answer: 100 percent false.

Hey we get it. Find as many ways as possible to make the game safer. That's a noble and fine goal, and one everyone is on board with at every level. But - there's always a but there, right - eliminating the kickoff changes the essence of the game if a team is down more than eight points in the final five-or-so minutes of the fourth quarter. Yes, keeping the kickoff just for the possibility of an onside kick seems extreme since the onside kick is such a rare play, and a successful onside kick is rarer still. That said, the possibility of the onside kick is paramount to the strategy and the late-game appearance of drama in a game predicated on parity at its highest level and desperate for upsets and late-game memories on the college level. This is not even getting to game-changing plays on returns - they will eventually move the kickoff spot so forward that all kickers will be able to put it through the end zone. No, the kickoff has to stay - even if it's a formality most of the time before the touchdown - because the potential of the onside kick dictates so much.

4. True or false, the ACC Network will be a success. Answer: True, but nowhere near the level of the SEC Network.

The ACC Network, which ESPN announced will launch by August 2019, will be similar in structure to the SEC Network in theory. ESPN will back the venture. The big news here, though, is the deal that was announced this morning locks in all current ACC members for the next 20 years, or through the end of the contract. It also automatically extends Notre Dame's contract with the conference in all sports but football through 2035-36, and if the Irish elects to give up their independence in football, they are contractually obligated to join the ACC. And while the SEC Network is printing money at a clip the current ACC can't match, if the Irish do join in football, the ACC Network will be every bit as big, if not bigger, nationally considering the Irish's wide-reaching appeal. Now whether the network ever launches - seems like a long time in technology between now and 2019, no? - is another discussion for another time.

5. True or false, WWE Monday Night Raw was the biggest circus mixed with a farce mixed with a whole lot of chicanery on TV Last night. Answer: Completely false.
The only way anyone would think that is if they watched none of the Republican National Convention. Dear Buckets. OK, in the traveling roadshow that has been the Trump campaign, in the sat 24 or so hours as the convention as started, we had his wife Melania Trump give a speech that was, shall we agree to call it disjointed. Rudy Giulani spoke to the group and if you had the volume off, he looked a lot like the evil cartoon boss in Space Jam. Finally Scott Baio apparently dropped the C-word on Hillary Clinton. OK, first and foremost that word is insulting no matter the use or who it's being tossed toward. Secondly, if we were going to drop a C-word on Ms. Clinton it would be criminal. C'mon Chachi, be better than that. It takes a whole lot of doing to make Ms. Clinton seem like a sympathetic character, but you did it. What would Joni say?
