Canyon Ridge will host Chattanooga Men's Metro

The Chattanooga Men's Metro is heading up the mountain.

For the first time since the course opened 10 years ago, Canyon Ridge Golf Club will be the site of the Chattanooga-area men's amateur championship this year. The tournament tees off July 10 at Rising Fawn, Ga.

"We considered having our own invitational this year. Then a couple weeks later we were approached about hosting the Metro, and we gladly agreed," Canyon Ridge head professional Doug Amor said Tuesday. "What's kind of neat is that we don't have a course record in a competitive round yet, so somebody is gong to set the official course record later this summer."

Canyon Ridge has been through ups and downs during its existence. Amor said it will be in championship condition come July.

"We've spent the last three years pumping money into the course, working on irrigation and resodding some areas, and we have a proper budget now," Amor said. "The course has improved a lot in a couple years.

"We want people to realize the course is good and eliminate the misconceptions that are out there."

The Chattanooga District Golf Association approved a proposal to have the Metro at Council Fire in 2016 and at Black Creek in 2017 as well as an extended rotation through 2024.

"I think a lot of golfers haven't been up to Canyon Ridge," Metro co-director Mike Jenkins said. "People who haven't been there will be surprised by how close it is and how incredible some of the scenery is up on the mountain.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to showcase Canyon Ridge."

Jenkins, treasurer of the CDGA, announced during the meeting Tuesday evening that the organization has donated more than $100,000 since 1991 to area golf charities including the Tennessee Golf Foundation, The First Tee of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf program.

"That's pretty amazing to me," Jenkins said. "The main purpose of the Metro is to raise money for different foundations every year."
