Chattanooga Men's Metro trophy named after longtime chairman

Mike Jenkins never won the right to have his name inscribed alongside Chattanooga golfing legends on the trophy given to champion of the Chattanooga Men's Metro tournament.

He finished runner-up twice.

But his name now will be forever inscribed on the silver cup presented to the winner each year.

Tuesday, the Chattanooga District Golf Association agreed to have the trophy named in Jenkins' honor, for the services he has provided to the organization for nearly 25 years.

"It's extremely humbling for one thing, and to be alongside names like Lew Oehmig, Ed Brantly, Harold Lane, the Richard Keenes and so forth, it's quite an honor," Jenkins said. "That's the past. It's nice to know that the work you've done is going to be remembered once you're out of the picture and retired.

"Evidently, this was the only way I'd ever get to hold the trophy."

The inscription reads: Michael C. Jenkins CDGA champion.

Jenkins has been chairman or co-chairman of the tournament since 1992 and has served as CDGA president or treasurer for the past 20 years.

"Mike's contributions on the local level are unparalleled anywhere in the state," said Tennessee Golf Association executive director Matt Vanderpool. "The work he has done with the CDGA, the First Tee and many other numerous projects in Chattanooga make him worthy of this honor.

"Our mission is to promote the game, and he's made a huge impact in Chattanooga."
