Around the Region: Burris-Long dominant in State Women's Four-Ball at Lookout Mountain

Former St. Andrew's-Sewanee golfer Jenna Burris and Middle Tennessee State teammate Hanley Long from Clarksville won the Tennessee Women's Four-Ball tournament in a runaway Tuesday and Wednesday at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. Also the 2015 champions, Burris and Long repeated Tuesday's 67 for an 8-under-par total and an eight-stroke lead. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coach Colette Murray and Nashville resident Evelyn Blackmon were the only other duo to break par in the second round, and their 70 made them the runners-up at 142. Reagan Kinnie of Murfreesboro and Rachel Watts of Newport were third at 144, and 2016 winners Maggie Scott of Charleston and Linda Mullins of Cleveland tied for fourth at 146. The Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga combination of Charlotte Grant and Georgia McCravey wound up ninth at 149, and Rossville's Darlene Werhnyak and Chattanooga's Meg Buchanan were 11th at 155. Three local duos - Kristy Snow with Patty Donahoo, Debbie Durham with Karen Burns and Kilbrey Fowler with Carlene Ryon - tied for 15th at 162 with Crossville's Jean Kraft and Betsy Hale and Vonore's Bonnie Wood and her partner from Loudon, Susan Miller.

* Johan Kok from Franklin and the host Hideaway at Arrington golf course won the Tennessee PGA Championship in a three-man playoff Wednesday. He won $10,000. Brian Wood of Memphis and Jake Reeves of Knoxville matched his 54-hole total of 6-under-par 207 and tied for second, receiving $5,000 each. Casey Fleniken of Knoxville (209) and Oliver Peacock of Nashville (209) joined the top three in qualifying for the 2018 Professional National Championship. Jared Melson of Tullahoma was seventh at 210 and the second of four alternates for the national event. Adam Forgey of Crossville and Richard Rebne of Council Fire finished 13th and 15th at 215 and 216.

Softball

* Jenna Mosley from Trion Middle School and the ProStar Fastpitch organization was announced Wednesday by USA Elite as one of its 15 first-team All-Americans for the class of 2022. The selections were based on performances at the Select 30 camps and games last weekend at Baton Rouge, La., in conjunction with the National Pro Fastpitch league championship series. Mosley started the camp as one of 137 girls in her age group and made the final 30 for Sunday's game and then the top half of that group for first-team status.

* The King's Men representing Lookout Valley Baptist Church followed their 2017 Kiwanis Church League slowpitch softball title with the Chattanooga Sports Leagues Men's A Division championship. They completed a 14-0 CSL season run with a 25-24 win over Alcoballics on Monday night, giving the King's Men a combined 27-2 record in the two leagues. They are sponsored by Rex Elmore Jr. with Garrett Reagan as player-manager. Troy Smith sponsors and manages the Alcoballics. Already with the 2017 ISA competitive church state championship, the King's Men are headed to the ISA Church World Series starting Sept. 9 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Cross Country

* Covenant College was picked to finish second in the men's standings and third in the women's standings in the 2017 USA South cross country season. The coaches' polls were released Wednesday. Both Covenant teams directed by seventh-year coach Katie Stanford will open Sept. 1 at the Georgia NCAA Division III Invitational at Berry College. The Covenant men got 85 points in the poll, eight fewer than reigning conference meet winner Piedmont but nine more than third-place league newcomer Berea, which got six first-place votes with Piedmont collecting four. Methodist and Maryville got 74 and 68 points. The Lady Scots got 183 points in the bigger women's league, with defending champion Piedmont receiving five firsts and 211 points and Berea receiving nine firsts and 187 points. Meredith and Methodist completed the top five with 179 and 177.
