University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior third baseman Tiffany Baker from East Ridge made the Capital One Academic All-District 4 Division I softball first team for 2011, and UTC senior pitcher Kandice Irwin from Knoxville and Tennessee Tech senior second baseman Lacie Coquerille from Dalton (Ga.) High School made the third team. Tennessee's Raven Chavanne also made the 11-player first team. District 4 includes the states of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. Baker, who will graduate Saturday, has a 3.70 grade point average as well as UTC's career and season records for home runs. Irwin has a 3.31 GPA and is on track to graduate in December. "Tiffany and Kandice are what we call true student-athletes, with the student aspect being the most important," Lady Mocs coach Frank Reed said. Baker leads the Southern Conference with 15 homers, 55 RBIs, a .481 on-base percentage and a .785 slugging percentage. Irwin led the NCAA last year with 11 saves and is tied for fifth nationally with 19 for her career, and she is 10-3 with six saves and a 1.70 ERA for the SoCon champions this season. UTC plays three games Saturday and Sunday at Western Carolina. Coquerille has a 3.74 GPA.
KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Second-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan and top-seeded Union College moved within one game of meeting for the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship by beating Reinhardt and Bluefield by 7-2 scores Thursday. Seventh-seeded Bryan College, which lost 19-3 to TWC in a Wednesday opener, won its second losers-bracket game, 11-5 over Reinhardt, and faces the Bulldogs again at 11 this morning. A Bryan win would force a 5 p.m. rematch for the right to face Union (44-9) or Bluefield in Saturday's title matchup. Andrew Smith and Josh King each was 3-for-5, Taylor Latham was 2-for-4 and Smith, Latham and Billy Veal drove in two runs each for Bryan (31-24), and Shane Clawson had two hits and matched DeWayne Boyd with two runs. Josh Wilson was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs for Reinhardt (18-35). For Wesleyan (35-18), Jordan Guida was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Rafael Carlot also drove in two runs, Cody Gaskill was 2-for-4 and AAC player of the year David Bergin had an RBI and was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sewanee senior Lindsay Maxwell finished third in the open-over-fences category Thursday as the IHSA National Championship Show began. She now will compete for the second year in a row in the Cacchione Cup for the nation's top Hunter Seat riders.
