Davidson edges Lady Mocs in OT

Despite the league-leading 15th goal of the season for Becca Smith, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost 2-1 in overtime to Davidson in Southern Conference women's soccer Sunday at Finley Stadium. It was the second 2-1 defeat for the Lady Mocs (6-9-2, 1-8-1) in three days. Davidson's Rachael Newmister scored from a Stephanie Piperno assist just 2:05 into the game, and Smith equalized on a penalty kick just before halftime. Julia Singley netted the winning goal for the Wildcats (8-8-2, 6-4) in the seventh minute of extra time. Davidson outshot UTC 25-14 and Taylor Mangrum made 13 saves in defeat.

• SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Sewanee soccer teams lost a hard-fought Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday against visiting Rhodes, 1-0 in overtime in the women's game and 2-1 in the men's. Neither team scored in the first half of the men's game, but Rhodes scored twice on goals by Will Cooner and Will Wurster to take a 2-0 lead. Watson Hartsoe got Sewanee on the board with nine seconds remaining in the match on a pass by Stewart Maxey. Friday evening against Millsaps, the Sewanee men won 4-0 after the women prevailed 2-1 with two Faith Spencer goals. Harsoe scored twice and Solly Thomas and Matt Lightfoot had the other goals for the male Tigers.

Volleyball

• STATESBORO, Ga. -- Georgia Southern defeated visiting UTC 25-13, 25-13, 25-18 in Southern Conference volleyball Sunday. Jennifer Kuroski had 10 kills for UTC (5-20, 3-7), matching the team high for Nicole Jeschelnik of GSU (14-12, 6-4). Melissa Green made 22 digs and Bridget Camacho had 16 assists in defeat.

• ATLANTA -- Sewanee lost 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 Sunday against Centre in the SCAC volleyball divisional tournament at Oglethorpe, leaving the Tigers 0-14 in league play this season and 6-20 overall. Kayla Sewell had 14 kills on .464 hitting for Sewanee, and Rachel Schuman had 31 assists and Sewell and Jamie Sue Wilson totaled 23 digs.

Fishing

• GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. -- Paul Elias of Laurel, Miss., completed his run to the Walmart FLW Tour Open bass tournament championship on Lake Guntersville with 23 pounds Sunday, giving him a four-day total of 102-8 and $100,000 in first-place money. Robert Behrle of Hoover, Ala., finished second at 85-5 and got $34,021. Russell Lane of Prattville, Ala.; Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C.; and Bryan Thrift of Shelby, N.C., were third through fifth at 74-4, 74-1 and 73-7.

Running

• In addition to the Bryan College men's victory, reported Sunday, over 33 other teams in the Southeast Class cross country meet Saturday at Berry College, Lee University and Sewanee had some good showings. Lee's Maggie Opelt was third in the women's 5k in 18:16.92, and teammate Cayce Bryan was 26th out of 310 runners as the Lady Flames finished 12th with Sewanee 13th and Bryan College 14th in the 35-team women's standings. Sewanee's Zoe Dubin was 31st. Behind Bryan's fourth- and sixth-place duo of Bryson Harper and Jason McLeod, Lee's Mike Walker was eighth in 25:44.61 in the 8k and Sewanee's Clay Bond and John Gilmer were 10th and 12th in 25:47.56 and 25:49.20.

Auto Racing

• Harrison resident Brian Pritchard won the Crate Late Model race Saturday night as part of the Grant Adcox Memorial event at Cleveland Speedway. Andy Picklesimer of Ooltewah was second and Kayne Hickman of Soddy-Daisy was third in the 20-lap race, with Chatsworth's Allen Green fourth and Maryville's Jason Welshan fifth.

Field Hockey

• Sewanee senior Elisa Landau ended her home career with two first-half goals in a 2-0 field hockey victory Saturday against Transylvania. Mary Kate McAlister set up Karen Dawson for an assist pass to Landau early in the match, and Landau converted a Sydney Philpott penalty corner in the 23rd minute. Anna Morrow made four saves in the Tigers, who outshot the visitors 24-12.
