Lee University softball coach Emily Russell announced two final recruits for the 2012-13 school year this past week: 5-foot-11 pitcher and first baseman Caroline MacAusland from West Linn High School in Oregon and infielder Amanda Lynn from Susanville, Calif. MacAusland batted .344 and hit six homers as her high school team MVP last season, and she played also for the Oregon Thunder Gold summer program. She was recruited also by Puget Sound, Linfield College and Treasure Valley Community College. "She is a strong pitcher who is a great hitter as well," Russell said in a Lee release, noting that one of her freshman pitchers will be redshirting because of an injury. "We are fortunate to find someone like Caroline to come in and join our program." Lynn, who was voted Lassen High School's most outstanding player in 2012 after three years as its top defensive player, also made an All-American list. Expected to play second base at Lee, "She immediately makes us an even faster team," Russell said. "She set the NFCA combine record for the home-to-first running time. We feel lucky to find an athlete like Amanda so late in the recruiting season."

• JASPER, Tenn. -- Sixty-one-year-old Paul Whitt of Manchester was the overall winner of the Fastest of the Fair 5-kilometer running race Saturday in 23 minutes, 45 seconds, and 17-year-old Hannah Raulston of South Pittsburg was the fastest female and fifth overall in 28:29. The race was in conjunction with the Marion County Fair, and Daniel Hopson and Gordon Tolliver of Jasper were second and third in 24:16 and 24:22 with Kimball's Dan Gothard fourth in 25:29.
