Volleyball Mocs top Davidson 3-1

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team improved to 8-2 in home matches Saturday by defeating Davidson 3-1 in a Southern Conference match at Maclellan Gym, 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17. Briana Reid had 12 kills, 12 digs and two block solos, fellow freshmen Lauren Gainer and Julimar Alvarado added 10 kills apiece and Christina Teter and Sarah Batterton had nine and eight in the Mocs' balanced attack, while Bridget Camacho had 35 assists and 14 digs and SoCon digs leader Paula Passmore made 28 digs for UTC (10-14, 4-5). Freshman Catherine Chason added 11 digs. Caroline Brown had 17 kills and 24 digs and Ariel Lay set 44 assists for Davidson (8-11, 4-5). The Mocs host SoCon South Division leader Georgia Southern today at 3 p.m. in a "Dig Pink" match promoting breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.

• Chelsea Van Dyk totaled 23 kills as the Covenant College volleyball team beat Huntingdon 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 in a Great South Athletic Conference match and defeated Reinhardt 25-16, 25-21, 26-24 in nonconference play Saturday on Lookout Mountain. Cora Schroeder made nine kills and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 28 assists and 11 digs against Huntingdon for the Lady Scots (18-6, 8-0), and Jessica Chittenden had two block solos with seven kills. Chittenden had nine kills to go with Van Dyk's 12 and Pretoria den Boer's 10 in the second win, when Kirkpatrick had 34 assists and Estes Carlson led in digs with 13.

• Kiara Govan had 18 kills as Tennessee Temple defeated visiting Trinity College 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 in volleyball Saturday. Brittany Hughes led the Lady Crusaders (13-14) in hitting percentage, and P.J. Sexton had five aces and 13 digs.

• Jamie Sue Wilson's 16 kills and 16 digs led Sewanee to a 25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21 Southern Athletic Association home volleyball win Saturday against Rhodes. Jamie Kosman and Kayla Sewell had 22 and 17 digs, Caroline Montgomery had seven kills and Rachel Schuman and Virginia Boyd totaled 22 assists for Sewanee (11-10, 5-8).

Running

• Saturday morning on Moccasin Bend, local middle school teacher Geno Phillips won the Great Pumpkin Run 10k benefiting the Joe Johnson Mental Health Center in 33 minutes, 18 seconds. Dianna Leun was the women's winner in 41:34 after being the fastest female also a week earlier in the Oktoberfest Ram Run 5k. Jacob Bradley was second overall in 34:11 and Dean Thompson was third and the male masters winner in 34:46 with fellow 40-over runners Tim Ensign, Joe Johnson, Ryan Shrum and Sean Higgins fourth through seventh. Johnson, 51, was the grand masters winner. Lisa Logan and Paula Cooper earned female masters and grand masters honors.

Tennis

• The four UTC senior men's tennis players taking part in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional event in Memphis lost their second-round matches Saturday. Manuel Barroetavena lost 6-3, 6-0 to top-seeded Anthony Rossi of Kentucky; Roberto Vieira fell 6-1, 6-3 to Middle Tennessee State's Ettore Zito; Ankit Chopra was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by the Memphis Tigers' Johnny Grimal; and Jackson Tresnan lost 6-1, 6-1 to Louisville's Austin Siegel. In a similar women's event in West Lafayette, Ind., five Lady Mocs all went to consolation brackets in their first main-draw singles matches Friday, but Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell beat Louisville's Mandy Brown and Stefanie Villajuan in doubles before losing to the fifth seeds from Kentucky.

Golf

• Seven-time Georgia State Golf Association men's player of the year David Noll Jr. of Dalton headlines the GSGA amateur team that is playing members of the Georgia Section PGA today and Monday in the annual Billy Peters Cup Matches at Capital City Club-Brookhaven in Atlanta. This is the sixth consecutive year for Noll in the Peters Cup competition, and he has been 6-2-2 in the last five. Noll already has won the Georgia Mid-Amateur and Atlanta Amateur Match Play championships this year.

• The Volunteer State's version of the Billy Peters Cup, the Tennessee Challenge Cup matches, will move to Fairfield Glade and Stonehenge Golf Course in the Crossville area next year. The 2011 Tennessee Challenge Cup ended a week ago at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. Crossville already bills itself as the Golf Capital of Tennessee, and the Challenge Cup joins the Tennessee Women's Open, the Tennessee Men's Senior State Open and the Tennessee Father-Son Championship at Stonehenge.

Field Hockey

• Anne Booke assisted on a Tilden Davis goal and scored the match-winner from a Molly Kennedy assist in the 49th minute as Sewanee beat Transylvania in field hockey for the third time this season Saturday, 2-1 at Lexington, Ky. The Tigers (5-7) won the September meetings 9-1 and 3-2 at Sewanee. The Tigers outshot the Pioneers (1-13) 15-8, and Anna Morrow made four saves.

Football

• Tennessee Titans radio announcer Mike Keith will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The award-winning broadcaster lived in Chattanooga during part of his childhood.
