UTC's Wanuch 2nd at Louisville

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Nathan Wanuch made a bid to become the Southern Conference men's cross country runner of the week for the the third time this season with his second-place finish Saturday morning in the top-level Blue race at the Greater Louisville Classic. The meet at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park is the largest collegiate meet of the season, with 115 colleges and universities represented. Northern Kentucky's J.J. Webber won the 8k in 24:43.30, and Wanuch finished in 24:46.41. UTC freshman Paul Stuart was 59th out of 362 finishers in 25:58.17, and the team was 19th in the huge field. UTC's Amanda Sumner was 18th in the women's 5k in 18:21.93, and freshman Teghan Henderson was 24th in 18:26.10. Senior Kathryn Stuart stepped in a hole and had to quit running.

• Bryan College was 27th as a team in the men's Gold race at the Greater Louisville Classic, led by junior Anthony Simpson with a 25:24 8k and Connor Hatfield, Alex Stephens, Joel Johnston and Parker Sorenson close behind in 25:46, 25:48, 25:59 and 26:05. Another group of Lions were 15th in the Silver race. Bryan was 12th in the women's silver division with sophomore Victoria Yates seventh individually in 19:29 and classmate Jessica Stockton 13th in 19:44. Freshman Michelle McLeod ran a 20:38.

• Spookie Eaves finished second and teammates Beth Burgess, Esther Anderson and Emily Davis were fourth, fifth and sixth as the Covenant College women's cross country team won the Great South Athletic Conference's pre-conference invitational tournament Saturday in Douglasville, Ga. Host Spelman finished second with 40 points to the Lady Scots' 28 and had the first- and third-place finishers in the 6k race in Heather Smith (24:33.04) and Kamila Nemcova. Eaves finished in 24:37.57.

Tennis

• Three UTC women's duos, two Lady Mocs singles players and the men's tandem of Pasha Grigorjevs and William Disterdick are set to play this morning for UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic flight titles at the Champions Club. The Lady Mocs' Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell won 9-8(3) in the women's top doubles flight semifinals and play for the title at 8:30 a.m.; they are scheduled to face each other for third place in singles at 10. Also playing for doubles crowns from the host school are Alexa Flynn and Kayla Jones in Flight 2 and Kelsey Coots and Katie Polk in Flight 3, and Coots and Jones are singles finalists in flights 4 and 5, respectively. Flynn and Claire Mulyadi are playing for third place in flights 2 and 3. Grigorjevs and Disterdick beat a Jacksonville State team 8-2 in the men's Flight 4 semifinals Saturday, and Disterdick also is in the Flight 4 consolation final. East Tennessee State has both finalists in men's Flight 2 singles and one each in flights 1, 3 and 4. In Flight 1 ETSU's Roger Ribiero, who beat UTC's Manuel Barroetavena in a semifinal, faces South Carolina's Kyle Koch at 10 a.m. UTC's Ankit Chopra lost to Samford's Austin Ackers in the Flight 3 semis.

Golf

• Covenant golfers Levi Nix and Trey Patterson have been chosen to compete as individuals in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament Oct. 21-24 at The Hombre club in Panama City Beach, Fla. Patterson is a sophomore, Nix a freshman. The Shorter University men's and women's teams are going.

Football

• UTC defensive coordinator Adam Fuller will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. Atlanta-based sportscaster Bob Neal, host of CSS's "Talking Football," will be the Oct. 8 speaker.
