UTC tied for eighth in women's tourney

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Emily McLennan is tied for fourth at 1-under-par 71 after the first round Friday of the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational women's golf tournament at Orange Park, Fla., and the Mocs share eighth place with Stetson and East Carolina at 302 in the 17-team event. Campbell and Elon lead with 293s. UTC newcomer Agathe Sauzon, Mette Kryger and Isabella Loza shot 76, 77 and 78 with Jordan Britt at 80. Playing as individuals, Porsche Campbell and Marion Duvernay shot 75 and 78.

Baseball

• Former Ringgold High School pitcher Matthew Crownover got his first college baseball win Wednesday by throwing five innings with three hits, no walks and one run allowed in Clemson's 9-2 home victory over Wofford. Today is exactly one year since Crownover (1-0) had elbow-ligament replacement surgery in his pitching arm.

• Tyler McClure got the pitching win and AdamWeldon recorded a save as Chattanooga State began its weekend home TCCAA series against Dyersburg State with its 11th victory in a row Friday. Reigning NJCAA Division I national player of the week Aaron Wright had a two-run homer and a single and Zach Lance also had two hits for the Tigers (17-4, 4-0).

• Brandon Zajac was the winning pitcher as Cleveland State won 8-2 in its TCCAA series opener Friday against visiting Southwest Tennessee.

• Heath Comerford from McMinn County hit two three-run home runs in Tusculum's 9-7 South Atlantic Conference baseball win Friday at Newberry.

• Hiwassee won 9-5 over Covenant and lost 9-6 to the host Scots in baseball Friday on Lookout Mountain. Chase Hoard was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Cody Armstrong had two hits and scored twice and Chris Large and B.J. Kennedy each had two RBIs in Hiwassee's win that featured a seven-run sixth inning. Josh Cassidy had two hits and Easton Arterburn was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Tigers (5-8) in game two. For Covenant (8-3), David Lockwood was 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the first game and tripled and drove in two runs in the win, when Patrick Sanderson doubled and batted in four runs, Will Cleland doubled twice and K.C. Simons was 2-for-2 and scored twice behind winning pitcher Alhanon Miller (3-0). Spencer Smith got the save.

• Bryan College began its weekend Appalachian Athletic Conference series against visiting Montreat with a 3-2 win in 11 innings Friday, as Kenny Knudsen allowed three hits in eight innings and Joey Vega pitched three hitless innings. Tyler Latham was 5-for-5 and Grant Zawadzki was 3-for-5 for the winning Lions, but they didn't drive in or score a run. Cody Rhinehart had two RBIs and Jess Cartner had the other.

• A six-run third inning for host William Carey sent Lee to an 8-2 Southern States Athletic Conference baseball loss Friday night in Hattiesburg, Miss. Karsten Strieby was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and Derrick Pitts and Cameron Brewster had seventh-inning RBIs for third-ranked Lee (19-4, 8-2).

• Berry College finished a three-game Southern Athletic Association baseball sweep of Sewanee by winning 12-2 and 8-1 Friday at Mount Berry, Ga. James Snover had two Sewanee hits in the first game, and Jack Rogers had two in the finale for the Tigers (4-8, 0-6). Berry is 8-6, 5-1.

Basketball

• The Lee University basketball teams will get off to early starts Wednesday in their final NAIA Division I national tournaments before the Cleveland school moves into NCAA Division II. It's particularly early for coach Marty Rowe's Lady Flames: At 30-2, they are one of the four No. 2 seeds and open the women's tournament in Frankfort, Ky., at 8:30 a.m. against LSU Shreveport (25-5). Cumberland University of Lebanon, Tenn., also is 30-2 and opens Thursday at 6:15 p.m. against Coastal Georgia (24-8). In the men's tournament at Kansas City, Mo., Lee's men coached by Tommy Brown are 29-3 and the overall third seed, and they begin play at 11:45 a.m. EDT Wednesday against Voorhees (22-11). Columbia (Mo.) at 33-0 and Lindsey Wilson at 29-4 are the top two seeds.

• Carson-Newman College plays today in an SAC men's basketball tournament semifinal in Greenville, S.C., against top-seeded Lincoln Memorial, which is 23-4 and swept the Eagles in their two regular-season meetings. LMU beat Tusculum 82-53 in the quarterfinals, when Carson-Newman (20-7) held off Lenoir-Rhyne, 58-54. All-SAC first-team player Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School led the Eagles in that game with 16 points, while Cody Henegar from Marion County had eight rebounds and a team-high three blocked shots. Carson-Newman's women lost 69-58 at Newberry despite 19 points by Shyra Clark from Cleveland.

• Northwest Whitfield's O'Shea Hill and Dalton's Maddie Howell were named the Region 7-AAAA basketball players of the year Thursday in a vote of league coaches. Joining Hill, who was also an all-region football player, on the boys' first team are Dalton's Alex Bautista and Northwest's Tanner Quarles, while Dalton's Demond Rucker, Heritage's Cody Sanders and Ridgeland's Jalen Smith are on the second team. Howell, a three-year starter for the Lady Catamounts, is joined by Southeast Whitfield's Megan Collins and Northwest's Autumn Blackwell on the girls' all-region first team. Dalton's Brooke Thomas and Heritage's Jada Hubbard made the second team.

Boxing

• The Red Bank Boxing Club is hosting an invitational tournament tonight at 6 at the Luken Sports Facility behind Red Bank High School. There are 11 teams taking part, and 15 bouts are scheduled. For more information call Skipper Fairbanks at 877-4113.
