Roadrunners 9-1 after Temple falls — and more Chattanooga region sports news

Dalton State's starting five combined for 86 points and 19 assists as the Roadrunners won 94-71 in men's basketball Tuesday night at McGilvray Gymnasium. Sean Tate scored 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and had seven assists and LaDaris Green had 21 points, 22 rebounds and five assists to lead the Roadrunners (9-1), who got 18 points from Jordan Bowling, 13 from Preston Earle and 12 points and five assists from Anthony Hilliard. Those five made 13 3-point baskets in 20 tries, led by Bowling with four. Temple's Bryan Jones had a game-high 25 points and Travaris Clark scored 17 for the host Crusaders (4-7). Jones was the USCAA national men's player of the week for his 29 points, including the winning 3, on 10-of-13 shooting against Bryan College. The Crusaders play Thursday night at Pikeville (Ky.), and DSC will host the Roadrunner Booster Club Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center with Concordia-Selma and DSC taking turns hosting the University of the Cumberlands and Cumberland University.

Soccer

• Tina Whaley of Chattanooga is US Youth Soccer's Region III girls' recreation coach of the year. An elementary school teacher who holds "Soccer Fridays" with her students at recess, Whaley has two soccer-playing daughters and has been a coach for four seasons "and is always willing to lend a helping hand," according to Tuesday's announcement release. She holds a USSF "E" coaching license. The national honorees will be announced Jan. 16 as part of the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia.
