University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Kristy Wieser was included on the eight-player preseason All-Southern Conference volleyball team announced Wednesday. UTC was picked to finish fifth out of the league's nine teams, four points behind East Tennessee State and five ahead of sixth-place Western Carolina. Samford and Furman shared the top spot, with UNC Greensboro a close third. Wieser was the only right-side hitter on the all-conference team. A transfer making her Mocs debut last year, she led the team with 296 kills and 350.5 points and had double-digit kills in 14 matches. She was second with 245 digs and third in blocks with 58. "I am happy for Kristy and her recognition," UTC coach Travis Filar said in a school release. "She was a very confident, go-to attacker for us last year, and we look for her to be that for us again this fall."

Cross country

* The Covenant College men's cross country team was picked to win the USA South Athletic Conference championship for the third year in a row, and the Covenant women were picked second behind another 2013 and 2014 champion, Meredith. Fifth-year Covenant coach Katie Stanford has 2014 USAS runner of the year Eliot Kaufmann back, along with conference meet champion Graham Massot. The Lady Scots, the league runners-up the last two years, include 2014 all-conference runner Ruthie Cargill and 2013 honorees Esther Anderson and Spookie Eaves.

Football

* The Murray County-Heritage high school football scrimmage tonight will be held in Chatsworth, Ga., instead of Ringgold, starting at 6. The Heritage field has been hit with heavy rains this week, and with consecutive home games to start the season, school officials did not want to risk damage.
