UTC's Melchionna wins at MTSU and other sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runner Maddison Melchionna finished first in 2:16.89 with teammates Rebecca Greenwall and Hannah Chamblin third and fourth and Makala Diggs and Helenka Kis eighth and 10th in the women's 800-meter run Saturday at the Middle Tennessee Invitational meet in Murfreesboro, and Amanda Cotter was second with Jessica York eighth in the indoor mile. UTC's Emily Drouin, Anna Kate Chance and Katie Ray were fourth, sixth and eighth in the 3000, and Kiaana Howard was eighth in the 400. Jacob Noorbergen was third in the men's 200 and seventh in the 55, and Trevor Janssen was fourth with Austin Casassa eighth in the 800. John Gilpin and Paul Stuart were sixth and seventh in the mile, and Drake Watson was sixth in the 55 hurdles.

Baseball

Lee University began a home baseball series against LeMoyne-Owen with two seven-inning wins Saturday, 4-1 and 8-0, as Dustin Lawson and Kyle Briner combined to pitch a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and Trenton Hill, Dakota Fowler and Grayson Bailey put together a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Andres Nelo was 4-for-4 and Hill was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game, and Siosi Poti was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs while Hill tripled and drove in another two runs and Zack Zyburt and Shae Durham each was 2-for-3 in game two.

The Tennessee Temple baseball team bounced back Saturday from its season-opening loss Friday with 5-0 and 4-1 wins over Alice Lloyd College at Walker Valley High School. Freshman Alex Walker pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts in the first win, when Ryan Bruce and Trey Hill each had an RBI and Micah Wyatt scored two runs. In the second game, TTU scored its four runs on three hits. Wyatt had two of those hits and an RBI, and he worked five innings for the pitching victory. Chase White pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.

Covenant College beat visiting Emory & Henry 6-0 and 7-5 in NCAA Division III baseball Saturday to complete a season-opening series sweep. K.C. Simons was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs and two RBIs in Saturday's opener, when Micah Mabe allowed one hit and struck out five in his five innings and Taylor Bloye completed the shutout. Scott Gillespie was 1-for-1 with an RBI in that game and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Andrew Beck homered and Simons and Will Cleland each scored two runs in the finale.

Francisco Colin pitched a no-hitter for Bryan College in a 7-0 baseball win Friday against the University of Rio Grande, and the Lions previously won 7-5 and added 10-4 and 13-0 victories Saturday to complete the NAIA series sweep.

Tennessee Wesleyan's baseball team won 5-0 over visiting Campbellsville on a Jarrod Jameson one-hitter but lost 6-2 in the second game of an NAIA doubleheader Saturday in Athens. Shell McCain was 2-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored and Ridge Hoopi-Haslam also homered in the first game for Wesleyan, but the Bulldogs got only two hits in game two. McCain was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Campbellsville's Alex Kline was 2-for-3 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs.

Tennis

The UTC men's tennis team lost 4-3 to Jacksonville State on Saturday at the Racquet Club in Hixson. JSU won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, but the Mocs got singles wins from Nick Wingord at No. 1, Lucas Plesky at No. 4 and Derrick Brown at No. 6. The Mocs' Pavels Grigorjevs and Luke Saunders lost tough three-set matches to Jeff Wendler-Filho and Dylan Gee at Nos. 2 and 3. UTC hosts Tennessee Tech at 10 this morning at the Racquet Club.

Coming off a 16-win season in 2014, the Covenant women's tennis team opened its 2015 season Saturday with a 7-2 win over Snead State. Claire Luger, Annie Deluca and Gracie Smith each won in singles and doubles for the Lady Scots.

The Dalton State men's tennis team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 6-3 in a match played Saturday at Fairfield Glade, Tenn. Nikolay Nikifornov and Adam Hornby won at No. 1 doubles, Joe Bray and Lucas de Souza won at No. 3 doubles and Bray, Jose Ruda, Sebastian Dartnell and de Sousa prevailed at Nos. 3-6 singles for the Roadrunners. Wesleyan got wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles from Ezequiel Gils and Frederico Staksrud, and Jaime Llado and Jacob Dorey won in doubles.

Football

UTC football coach Russ Huesman will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday, and the public is invited. He will be talking about the Mocs' second top-rated FCS recruiting class in a row. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
