Baseball Flames sweep Union University and other sports news

Scoring the last three runs in Saturday's first game and the last two in the rematch, the Lee University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Gulf South Conference opponent Union University with 3-2 and 3-1 wins. Dustin Lawson allowed two hits and struck out eight batters in six innings but Ridge Ackerman got the first-game pitching win with three innings of two-hit relief, and Chevis Hoover struck out 11 in five innings in starting a seven-inning three-hitter with Ryan Zimmer in the series finale. M.J. Brown had an RBI in each game for Lee (9-0, 3-0), and Zack Zyburt and Cameron Scott took turns collecting two hits.

* Andrew Beck had a walk-off winning hit for the second Covenant College baseball game in a row against Methodist, this time a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Scots followed that 4-3 victory in the first game of Saturday's USA South doubleheader with a 15-1 loss. Scott Gillespie was 2-for-3 with a home run in the series finale for the Scots (5-1, 2-1). Caleb Bloye was 2-for-2 with an RBI in Saturday's opener, when Gillespie, K.C. Simons and Perry Rigby each was 2-for-4 and Taylor Bloye was the winning pitcher in relief of Micah Mabe.

* The Tennessee Wesleyan baseball team improved to 5-4 for the season by beating visiting Indiana Tech 14-4 and 12-6 on Saturday. Bryan College (10-1) opened a doubleheader against Madonna with a 10-3 win.

* Cleveland State beat Vincennes 12-7 and 8-7 in junior college baseball Saturday, lifting the Cougars to 6-1. Janson Roberson was 4-for-4 and Wright Hackett was 3-for-4 and each scored twice in the first game, when Caleb Longley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, Hagen Wilkey drove in three and Cole Baxley was 2-for-4. Drew Korzybski (1-0) allowed one hit and an unearned run and struck out eight in five innings of relief.

General

* Both area Fellowship of Christian Athletes organizations are holding annual fundraising banquets soon. The one for southeastern Tennessee is Tuesday night, weather permitting, with former Alabama and Seattle Seahawks star Shaun Alexander as the special speaker. * The Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction banquet on March 2 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Nineteen inductees and nine special award winners will be honored. Tickets cost $35 and are available by calling Catherine Neely at 842-7474.

* There will be no Chattanooga Quarterback Club meeting Monday, because of the Presidents' Day holiday. The noon luncheon gatherings will resume on Feb. 23.

Weightlifting

* Matthew Walter of Chattanooga finished second last weekend at the Southeastern Power Lifting Federation competition in Winchester, Tenn. That qualified the 23-year-old personal trainer (Forte Fitness) and UTC senior for the world championships in Las Vegas in September. Walter had a 505-pound dead lift, a 410-pound squat and a 315-pound bench press in the Southeastern meet. Meanhile, Forte Fitness owner Julian Kaufman has qualified through USA Masters Weightlifting for the Pan American Games in June in Savannah, Ga., and the World Games in September in Finland. He was second in the American Masters 40-44 age group, 77-kg class (169 pounds) with pesonal bests in the clean and jerk and in the snatch.

Softball

* After pitching Lincoln Memorial to a 2-1 softball victory over Trevecca Nazarene in the second game of the season-opening doubleheader Wednesday, freshman Brianna Taylor from Arts & Sciences took a loss Saturday against Georgia College at Columbus State, when she allowed six hits and three runs in four innings. Against Trevecca, the Ooltewah resident escaped a bases-loaded first inning and allowed a home run in the second but gave up only three hits the rest of the game and struck out nine batters. Former Chattanooga State pitcher Haley Fagan had a three-hitter as Trevecca won the first game 8-0.

Lacrosse

* George Bukawyn scored five goals as the Sewanee men's lacrosse team opened its season with an 11-5 win Friday against visiting Colorado College. Hayden Byrd and Cotter Brown added two goals apiece, Peter Brown had three assists and a goal and Selby Austin had nine saves for the Tigers.
