TWC baseball completes sweep of Indiana Tech and ther sports news

After beating Indiana Tech twice Saturday, 14-4 and 12-6, the Tennessee Wesleyan completed the NAIA baseball series Sunday with a 4-0 win. Ridge Hoopi-Haslam was 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a double and four RBIs and Wardy Polanco and Shell McClain each had two hits and three RBIs in the series opener for TWC, and Hoopi-Haslam was 2-for-3 with two runs while Brad Carpenter was 3-for-4 and Tyler Albert hit a grand slam in Saturday's second game. Sunday, McClain knocked in two runs and Polanco went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Taylor Patterson picked up the win with two innings of perfect relief of starter Taylor Saucedo.

Sewanee opened its baseball season Saturday by beating Johnson University 20-2 and 10-1. Jack Whaley was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for the Tigers in the first game and 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs in game two, when Tony Dykes was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Nathaniel Howard and Tyler Minkkinen had three hits apiece and four and three runs in the first game, Howard with two RBIs, and Michael Walker and Jackson Cooper combined to score six runs and bat in five.

The Chattanooga State baseball team beat eighth-ranked Georgia Perimeter 9-1 and 10-8 on Saturday with Austin Hutchison pitching a complete game for his third win of the season and then the Tigers (7-2) overcoming a 7-1 deficit and winning game two on Nate Schmal's home run capping a five-run seventh inning. David Mayo, Andy Clay and JoJo Underwood each had two hits and two RBIs in game one, and Clay and Underwood had two hits again in the rematch, when Sean Williams was the winning pitcher in relief.

Softball

Covenant College opened its softball season Saturday by winning 12-6 and then losing 19-7 to visiting Berry College. Madison Quirk was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and Morgan Lane was 3-for-5 and matched Jordan Brett and Jami Johnson with two RBIs in game one for Covenant, and Joni Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Quirk was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs in game two, when Berry totaled 24 hits with Sarah Moore going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs and Rachel Barton and Brooke Mackelburg combining to go 6-for-6 with seven RBIs and six runs scored.

Basketball

The Sewanee basketball teams split a doubleheader at Birmingham-Southern in Southern Athletic Association play Sunday, with the women's team winning 78-73 while the men lost 65-55. In the women's game, Jamie Chauvin shot 9-for-14 from the field and finished with 26 points, as Sewanee scored 50 points in the second half to rally from a five-point halftime defecit. Hannah McCormack added 21 points in the win, and Savannah Rose also scored in double figures with 12 points. In th emen's game, Marcellus Caldwell led the Tigers with 15 points, and Keshonn Carter added 14 points, but BSC shot 54.3 percent -- including 71.4 percent in the first half -- to hold on for the win.

Former Dade County standout Erika Woodfin was 7-of-14 on 3-point shots Saturday in scoring 32 points for Reinhardt in a 69-60 Appalachian Athletic Conference basketball win at Point. She scored eight points as the Lady Eagles jumped to a 14-3 lead and scored eight in a row when Point got within four points late in the first half.

Swimming

Both Sewanee swimming and diving teams finished fourth out of six teams in the SAA conference meet this past weekend at the Birmingham Crossplex, and Tigers sophomore Caty Hueske followed a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle with first-place swims in the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke, the latter in a school-record time of 2:05.12. Another Sewanee champion was men's diver Charles Boclair III in the 1-meter event, with David Evans second in the 3-meter and Courtney Moore third in both. Sewanee's Carolyn Rice was second in the women's 400 individual medley after being third in the 200 IM, and Michael Whitehead and Edward Dennis were second and third in the men's 400 IM. Brian Glatt was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 free, and Jackson Cromer was third in the 200 back.

Lacrosse

Ellie Murphy's three goals and two assists led the Sewanee women's lacrosse team to an 11-7 season-opening victory Saturday over SAA rival Centre, which was outshot 3 3-16 and got 14 saves from Allison Eisner. Mallory Grimm had two goals and two assists and Payton Fields, Katie Riddle and Relly King also scored two goals each for Sewanee. GPS alumnae Audrey Powers and Haden Gibbons were two of three Centre players with two goals.
