Ex-Signal star Whitmire hits $1,000 shot and other sports news

Samford University student Hogan Whitmire from Signal Mountain sank a half-court shot during halftime of the basketball Bulldogs' loss to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Thursday and earned $1,000 tuition on behalf of Talladega Superspeedway. He plans to apply it to dental school this fall. Whitmire was the football quarterback for Signal Mountain's Eagles, among other athletic contributions, and is one of the practice players who regularly work against the Samford women's basketball team. "We work mostly on defense with the ladies' team, so that probably didn't help with the shot, but I'll take it," he said in a Talladega release. "I always take crazy shots when I am in the gym and probably shoot better around that range than from the 3-point line, but I never actually tried those shots. I am really thankful to the speedway for offering this promotion." Whitmire is a NASCAR fan and regularly goes to races at Talladega with his Sigma Nu fraternity brothers. "We will have 50 or more guys come out each race and make it a big social event," he said. "We have done it for years and can't wait to go back (the first weekend in May)."
