Lighthouse Lookouts win Marietta softball tournament and other sports news

The Lighthouse Lookouts/Athletic Shop men's slowpitch softball team from Chattanooga won the 50-plus major division in the Peach State Classic last weekend in Marietta, Ga. The division included seven teams, and the Lighthouse Lookouts went 5-1. They beat the Atlanta Monarchs/Miken and lost to Doc C's from Pensacola, Fla., in pool play and then edged the Monarchs 24-22 and clipped top-seeded Doc C's 26-23 in bracket play, getting a tying sacrifice fly from Rodney Waters and a three-run homer from Van Shumaker in the bottom of the seventh inning of the latter game. Lighthouse then beat Cherokee Trophy from Woodstock 27-17 despite hitting no home runs and whipped Cherokee Trophy again for the title, 25-8, with seven double plays - one in each inning - behind pitcher Stacy Powell. Butch Womack, usually a pitcher but playing second base, was involved in five. Lighthouse's Art Pendergrass was the tournament MVP after batting .808 with five homers and 15 RBIs, and shortstop Shumaker was the most valuable defensive player and hit .750 with five homers and 21 RBIs. Also earning all-tournament honors were Powell (.773), Mike Wood (.760, 4 HRs, 10 RBIs), David Reynolds (.739), Steve Moffett (.720, 15 RBIs), Womack (.720), Waters (.640, 8 HRs, 16 RBIs) and Mark Talley (.640).
