Former Red Bank High School and Austin Peay State University defensive lineman Malcolm Goines was on the 45-man United States national team that routed Mexico 30-6 in the International Federation of American Football World Championship competition Thursday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The 6-foot-2, 315-pound Goines played for Grand Rapids Community College between his high school and NCAA teams in Tennessee. Former Boise State and Colorado coach Dan Hawkins is the U.S. head coach for the IFAF Worlds. The Americans practiced 16 times in nine days in Akron before beginning the seven-nation event that runs through July 18. France beat Brazil 31-6 and Australia whipped South Korea 47-6 in other games.

Golf

* Aubree Jones of Covington won the Tennessee Girls' Junior Amateur golf tournament Thursday by shooting a 76 and completing a three-day 220 at the Foxland Harbor course in Gallatin. Hanley Long of Clarksville was second at 220, and Winchester's Malia Stovall finished fifth at 225 with a final-day 74. Signal Mountain's Katherine Holmes and Manchester's Savannah Quick tied for 10th at 231, and Manchester's Ashley Gilliam and McMinnville's Hannah Powell shared 15th at 236. Angelina Chan of Franklin won the 10-14 age group by a stroke with a 228, and Cleveland's Kyndall Shamblin and Crossville's Kelsee Neely were 11th and 12th at 258 and 261.

Academics

* Covenant College had 104 athletes listed among the USA South's 2014-15 academic all-conference selections announced Thursday. Making the list requires playing on a varsity team and compiling at least a 3.0 grade point average in both the fall and spring semesters. In a related note, eight Covenant sports programs had team GPAs of at least 3.0 for the spring, led by volleyball at 3.46 and women's soccer at 3.44. The top men's program academically for the Lookout Mountain School was cross country with a 3.31 GPA.
