Preston Elwell of Signal Mountain, representing Winthrop University, finished fourth in men's javelin at the USATF Junior Championships (ages 19-under) meet Thursday in Eugene, Ore., with a personal-best throw of 196 feet, 5 inches. That made him an All-American in the event and an alternate for the United States team for the Pan American Junior Championships this summer in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Golf

* Reigning NAIA national golf champion Sean Elliott from Dalton State College again is linked to all-time golfing great Jack Nicklaus. Elliott has followed winning the Golf Coaches Association of America's NAIA Jack Nicklaus Award with being selected to the 24-player 2015 All-Nicklaus team presented by Barbasol. It includes guys from all levels of the NCAA as well as the NAIA and NJCAA. Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart, Alabama's Robby Shelton, Georgia's Lee McCoy and Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans are among the other selections. Another is Alistair Tidcombe from DSC's league rival Coastal Georgia.

* Crawford Collett of Lookout Mountain, Ga., and Landon Hicks of Dalton are among the 91 young golfers set to compete Monday in a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying tournament at the University of Georgia course in Athens. They will be playing for four spots and two alternate positions in the USGA national event July 20-25 in Bluffton, S.C. The field will be cut after 18 holes for another 18.
