Johnson-Brown leading Moccasin Bend Four-Ball and other sports news

Ricky Johnson and Winston Brown combined for a 63 Saturday and a two-stroke lead in the Moccasin Bend Golf Club Four-Ball tournament. Wayne Woolfall and Josh Baker shot 65 and will challenge the leaders in the final grouping this morning. Three duos are tied for third at 66 - Richard Keene with Walt Moffitt, Rusty Pickett with Doug Darr and Matt Crowder with David Watts - and Rick Honeycutt and Keith Davis shot 67. In the senior division, Gary Haskew and Mike Jenkins tied Tim Burns and Joe White for a two-stroke first-day lead at 69.

Volleyball

* Choo Choo City Volleyball Club's 17 Black finished fifth in the AAU 17 Premier national tournament this past week in Orlando, Fla. The members of the team are Gabby Gray, Haven Bethune, Lily Turner, Rebecca Hill, Sidney Killingsworth, Alex Biro, Hanna Matthews, Madison Pruett, Kaylee Stone and Alex Volker, and the coaches are Brian Wood, Libby Peigen and Stephanie Kirkpatrick. Chattanooga's Alex Smith played on the Volley One Academy team based in Kennesaw, Ga., that tied for third in AAU 16 Classic. Smith's team won 12 straight matches before falling 27-25, 25-22 Friday afternoon to the Aurora, Ill., team that won the championship. Smith played through the season with the Chattanooga/Cleveland-based C4 club.

Auto Racing

* I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater will have a Fourth of July special Saturday with racing in all its regular divisions, bonus races and somewhat larger payouts and live music from Joey Wilson (5-7 p.m.). The numeral 4 will be prominent. For instance, based on eight-car entries, the Limited Late Model division will require $124 to start and pay $2,004 to the winner, while the Sportsmen class will pay $604 to win with $64 to start, B-Hobby and Four Cylinder each will pay $404 to win with $44 to start and Thunder and Front Wheel Drive each will pay $304 to win with $34 to start. The top four qualifiers or heat-race finishers in each division will compete in extra races for $124 to win, and a huge fireworks show is planned for intermission, according to a track release. Gates will open at 5 p.m., and drivers may sign in until 6:45. Grandstand admission costs $10, or $5 for ages 6-12, and tier parking costs $15, $5 for ages 6-12. Pit passes are $30 and $15. Darren Goins has won six of the track's 12 Sportsmen features so far this season, while Dustin Pueirtt has five Four Cylinder victories, Cory Hedgecock has four Limited Late Model wins and Kane Pelfrey has four in FWD.
