Lady Cougars in basketball region final

Jlynn Majors had 24 points, seven rebounds and five steals as second-seeded Cleveland State beat Jackson State 70-58 in the women's semifinals Friday of the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII basketball tournament in Memphis, but the fourth-seeded Chattanooga State men lost 74-59 to tournament host and top-seeded Southwest Tennessee (24-3). Jamesha Mosley scored 18 points and joined Majors and Brandi Whitted with four assists each and Brandi Kilpatrick had eight rebounds for the Lady Cougars (17-10), who face nationally sixth-ranked Walters State (29-2) at 3 p.m. EST today for the championship. Walters beat Volunteer State 61-47. Chaunce Watkins had 19 points and eight rebounds and Brandon Shingles and Ronald Jones scored 12 and 11 points in defeat for Chattanooga State (16-10), and Delmont Walton also grabbed eight rebounds. The second semifinal matched Columbia State against Motlow (23-5), which beat Cleveland State 94-77 on Thursday as Reggie Williams scored 22 points with four 3s and Dequon Miller was 5-for-7 on 3s and had 20 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Darrion Leslie had 24 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists for Cleveland State (11-17), while Rico Overall had 16 points and five assists.

* Top-seeded host Lee University beat third seed Tennessee Temple 84-57 for the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Region women's basketball title Friday. Shelby Brown had 29 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots and Erin Walsh and Carrie Cheeks scored 18 points apiece for Lee (20-8), which got 12 assists from Alex Swope and nine rebounds each from Christina Johnson and Cheeks. Amanda Rector scored 18 points, Bree Smith added 15 and Angel Foster had 13 points and nine rebounds for Temple (15-16), and Kirsten Fowler had 11 rebounds. Temple had edged No. 2 seed Bluefield 65-64 on Thursday with 17 points from Smith and 16 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots from Foster. Kristiana Purvis scored 14 points, Rector had eight assists and Fowler had nine rebounds and five steals.

* Top-seeded Dalton State lost a late 10-point lead and fell 66-62 to William Carey in the SSAC men's basketball tournament semifinals Friday night in Montgomery, Ala. Dalton State, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I, had survived a scare from Brewton-Parker and won 68-64 on Thursday with Ladaris Green combining 18 points with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, Jordan Bowling scoring 16 points and Anthony Hilliard and Sean Tate adding 11 and 10. Friday, Preston Earle scored 19 points, Bowling had 18 and Jamaine Burrey added 16 in defeat. William Carey, which outscored the Roadrunners 46-14 in the paint, has given them two of their four losses this season. The first was 101-95 in triple overtime on Nov. 28 in Hattiesburg, Miss. Ninth-ranked Martin Methodist beat Bethel 87-72 in the first semifinal.

Softball

* After being frosted out of their own Frost Classic tournament last weekend, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball Mocs finally resumed play Friday in Deland, Fla., but they lost 11-1 to 25th-ranked Kansas and then got rained out against host Stetson. Kansas (19-1) scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and then, after a rain delay, made it 10 earned runs off senior pitcher Taylor Deason with a three-run second. Kailey Palazzolo pitched the third and fourth innings and allowed two hits and a run and struck out four batters. Maddie Stein and Daniella Chavez hit home runs and were among three Jayhawks with two RBIs apiece. Nicole Osterman homered for the Mocs (11-5).

* Tennessee Wesleyan won 5-4 and 8-1 in AAC softball Friday at Columbia (S.C.) College and is now 5-3 overall, 2-0 in the league.

* Madison Gossett from Dade County pitched a three-hitter and Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton walked and scored the run in 20th-ranked Brenau's 1-0 NAIA softball victory Friday against Cumberland in the Gulf Shores (Ala.) Invitational tournament, and the Golden Tigers (12-1) then beat Columbia (Mo.) 7-5 with Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and Gossett striking out nine in improving to 7-0 for the season.

Baseball

* Alex Kerr and K.C. Simons each had two hits and an RBI and Caleb Bloye also had two hits for the Covenant College baseball team Friday, but the Scots (6-6, 3-4) lost 6-2 in a USA South game at LaGrange. Covenant starting pitcher Garrett Kriston struck out eight batters in seven innings.

Tennis

* The Covenant tennis teams both won 9-0 Friday at Greensboro College.
