Lee softball splits doubleheader and other sports news

*Lee softball split a doubleheader with Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday, winning 4-3 in the first game and losing 8-4 in the second. After taking a 3-0 lead, Lee gave up thee runs late and were tied heading to the seventh inning where they scored the winning run. Angie Hughes got the win, striking out four in two innings of work, and Dominique Hannah and NiaRaye Ceaser each had RBIs for the Lady Flames. Hughes was the losing pitcher in the second game, and Kaylie Drew was 2-for-2 with a run scored in the loss.

* Tennessee's Erin Gabriel pitched a perfect game and Annie Aldrete was 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs as the 15th-ranked softball Vols won 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night against East Tennessee State, which will host UTC in a Southern Conference series this weekend. Rainey Gaffin and Megan Geer also homered and Scarlet McSwain was 2-for-2 with a triple, a double and three runs scored for Tennessee (22-7), while Tory Lewis from GPS was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run.

* NAIA-ranked Brenau edged Tennessee Temple 4-3 and 5-4 in softball Tuesday at Gainesville, Ga., with Madison Lacy from Dade County going 2-for-3 and Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton and Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy each scoring a run in the second win for the Golden Tigers (18-6). Jillian McGill was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in that game for Temple (4-12), while Kaleigh Riley and Raven Pope each was 2-for-4.

Baseball

The Lee University baseball team lost 6-3 Wednesday at Columbus State. Ben Holland, Slosi Poti and Nathan Wierzgac each had two hits in the loss and Holland had two RBIs.

* Cleveland State lost 6-5 visiting Georgia Highlands in junior college baseball Wednesday. The Cougars gave up five runs in the sixth inning after leading 3-0. Chris Caffrey, Hagen Wilkey and Connor Coakley each had two hits, and Wilkey and Clay Hetland each had a pair of RBIs. Drew Buckhault took the pitching loss for Cleveland State, which used nine pitchers in the loss.

* Tennessee Temple swept a doubleheader Wednesday in college baseball at Alice Lloyd. The Crusaders won the first game 12-0 and the second 9-6. Ryan Bruce went 3-for-4 in the first game with a triple and three runs scored, and H. Brown also had three hits as well as two RBIs and two runs scored. Hunter Giles threw a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts over his six innings pitched. In the second game, Temple jumped out to a 5-2 lead after two hinnings but had to survived several Alice Lloyd rallies. Micah Wyatt and Caden Shadrick each had three hits, and Hunter Brown and Caleb Lee each had two hits and two RBIs. Wyatt picked up the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a wilke with three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings, and Alex Walker pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the save.

* Tennessee Wesleyan defeated visiting Hiwassee 6-1 and 7-5 in a baseball doubleheader Wednesday.

Track & Field

* The Lee and Tennessee Wesleyan track teams had a number of outstanding performances in the 40-team Emory Invitational meet last weekend in Atlanta. The TWC and Lee men finished sixth and 11th, each with a one-two finish in an event. Lee's Harold Smith and Emmanuel Kipchumba were first and second with teammate Adam Gullette sixth and TWC's Chad Whitehead seventh in the 800-meter run, and Wesleyan's Joseph Mullen and Roderick Bowman were the top finishers in the 10,000. Whitehead was second in the 1500, and the Bulldogs' Avery Hubbard and Chaz Hawkins had the fastest preliminary times in the 100 dash and 110 hurdles, respectively, and finished third and fourth. Lee's Rick Barry was second in the long jump, and TWC's Arnold Mutuse and Lee's Camden Perez were third and fourth in the 3000 steeplechase. In women's events, Lee's Jessica Childers won the 1500, lowering her personal best by 17 seconds, teammate Adrian Martin was second with school records in the 100 and 200 dashes, and TWC's Robbiccaa Williams was third in the 5000 with Rachel Lawhorn fourth in the discus. TWC had both fifth-place 4x100 relays.
