Rocky Face's Oxford in Georgia Four-Ball lead and other sports news

Matt Oxford from Rocky Face and Philip Hughes of Kennesaw took the first-round lead in the championship flight of the Georgia Four-Ball golf tournament Friday at Valdosta Country Club with a 7-under-par 65. They have a two-stroke margin over the next pair. Calhoun's Tre Lamb and Dalton's Tony Patterson are tied for fourth at 69

Baseball

* Bryan College won 6-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball Friday at Reinhardt, beginning a three-game weekend series. The Lions are 25-8, 7-4 in the AAC.

* Walters State scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning and beat Cleveland State 9-4 in TCCAA baseball Friday. Jarrett Hood's second homer of the game plated three runs in the ninth for the Senators (31-5). Wright Hackett, Jammer Strickland and Chris Caffrey hit solo homers for the host Cougars (12-12), while Conner Coakley was 2-for-3 and Strickland and Anthony Hunt each was 2-for-4.

Softball

* The nationally sixth-ranked Chattanooga State softball team improved to 26-8 overall and 13-1 in the TCCAA with two five-inning routs Friday at Southwest Tennessee, 23-0 and 19-2. Sharlene Godoy struck out 12 batters in the first game and missed a perfect game by allowing a hit with two outs in the fifth, while Lindsey Stickrod was 5-for-5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs, Courtney Styles was 3-for-4 with six RBIs and Sydney Sloan was 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs. Hanna Manley, the reigning NJCAA Division I pitcher of the week for her 2-0, two-save weekend that included a no-hitter, had a three-hitter in game two Friday, when Dana Horgan and Courtney Crawford each was 4-for-4 and scored three runs, Izzy McCurry homered and doubled and drove in four and Shannon Plese doubled and singled and also had four RBIs, scoring twice.

* Tennessee Temple won 4-0 and lost 5-0 in a makeup softball doubleheader Friday at Point University. Carley Daniel pitched a six-hit shutout in the first game for the Lady Crusaders (5-13), and Taylor Tsai was 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Raven Pope had two RBIs in that game and went 2-for-3 along with Kaleigh Riley and Autrell Brazzle in game two.

* Tennessee Wesleyan beat visiting Bluefield 11-1 in five innings and 4-1 in AAC softball Friday, and Bryan won 9-0 in five innings and 5-4 in eight innings over visiting St. Andrews. Bryan and TWC lead the league with 7-1 and 10-2 AAC records and are 15-9 and 17-5 overall. Callie Cross was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Stephanie Bridges was 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the first game for Wesleyan, when Alexis Adams was 2-for-2 and scored twice. Adams and Alyssa King each was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the 4-1 victory, and Kayla Stevens was 2-for-4 and matched Adams with two runs scored.

* Covenant College lost 9-5 and 8-6 to visiting Methodist in USA South softball Friday. Sarah Stapleton drove in five runs in the two games for Methodist (12-12, 6-6). Amanda English was 2-for-2 and Morgan Lane was 2-for-4, each with two RBIs, in the first game for Covenant (9-9, 2-8), and Madison Quirk and Jordan Brett each was 2-for-4 as well. Brett was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in game two, when Jami Johnson also had two RBIs and English was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Tennis

* The Sewanee women's tennis team moved up this week to No. 12 in the ITA's national rankings for NCAA Division III, and the Tigers' Bronte Goodhue and Lindsey Liles are ranked No. 1 in doubles in the Atlantic South Region and Nos. 4 and 5 in singles, with freshman Christina Merchant No. 25. Goodhue is from Chattanooga and Girls Preparatory School. Also, the Sewanee men's team entered the national rankings at No. 30.

Lacrosse

* Sewanee improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse this season with a 21-3 home victory Friday night featuring four goals by Robbie Berndt and three goals and two assists by Matthew Stiefel. Wil Friedman, Jack Harris, Tyler Calnan and Nick Patterson added two goals each for the Tigers, and Browning Altizer made nine saves.
