Wesleyan, Bryan battle for AAC tourney title and other sports news

Top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan defeated fourth seed Point in Wednesday's final game in the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. That knocked the Georgia team out of the event and left Wesleyan and No. 3 Bryan fighting it out today for the championship. TWC (41-10) beat Milligan 9-4 in Tuesday's late game and was still perfect in the tournament after putting out Point, while Bryan (42-15) already was 3-0 after eliminating Reinhardt 8-4. Preston King was 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs in that game for Bryan, while Langston Calhoun drove in two runs and Andrew Urbinstondo and Joey Underwood each had two hits and scored twice. Kevin Roberts also had two hits and Chad Burrows was the winning pitcher.

Tennis

* Sewanee senior Bronte Goodhue from Girls Preparatory School is the Southern Athletic Association women's tennis player of the year for the third season in a row, and Sewanee's Conchie Shackelford is the coach of the year for the same span, which is as long as the league has existed. Junior Lindsey Liles joined doubles partner Goodhue on the All-SAA first team, and Tigers freshmen Maggie Crumbliss (from Baylor) and Christina Merchant were second-team selections with freshman Clementina Davila and junior Annie Veron receiving honorable mention. One of only two three-time SAA athletes of the year in any sport, Goodhue was unbeaten in 2015 SAA matches in both singles and doubles and is ranked No. 4 in the Atlantic South Region in singles and third in doubles with Liles, who is 12-1 in singles. The NCAA announced Wednesday that those two will be going again to the national tournament in both singles and doubles. It is set for May 21-23 in Mason, Ohio. Crumbliss has 11 singles wins and is 14-0 in doubles, and Merchant has 12 singles victories. Shackelford surpassed 500 victories for her career this season, and the Tigers are 17-5 and ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division III. They are hosting an NCAA regional and face Agnes Scott this morning.

* Sewanee's Avery Schober from Dallas is the SAA men's tennis player of the year for the second consecutive season, and he, Rand Jackson and Baylor School graduate Eric Roddy were All-SAA first-team choices with Connor Winkler earning honorable mention. Schober had a 17-6 regular season at No. 1 singles, 6-1 in SAA play, while Roddy had seven SAA victories among 14 singles wins and added 13 dual-match doubles wins. The 28th-ranked Tigers play this weekend in an NCAA Division III regional in St. Louis; they will meet No. 15 Whitman on Saturday.
