Furman ends UTC's volleyball win streak, 3-2 and other sports

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team rallied from two sets down but lost in five at Furman on Friday (27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-27, 15-12), bringing the Mocs' win streak to an end at 11 matches. Annie Bierman had 28 kills and 15 digs in the Southern Conference match for Furman (11-5, 4-1), which got 45 assists and 12 digs from Jo Wilks. Lauren Greenspoon returned to UTC's lineup from an ankle injury and had 60 assists, while Lauren Gainer and Allie Davenport had 15 kills apiece and Kristy Wieser, Briana Reid and Sarah Batterton added 14, 13 and 11. Catherine Chason had 32 digs for the Mocs (15-3, 4-1), and Miranda Elpers and Reid added 17 and 13. Elpers served three aces.

* Second-place Bryan College won 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-12) over Montreat in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball Friday, and third-place Milligan won 3-2 (24-26, 25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 15-7) at Tennessee Wesleyan. Shelby Grace Enochs had 31 assists and 11 digs, Kara Stamper had 14 kills on .609 hitting and Rachel Mosley had 10 kills on .471 hitting for Bryan, 14-11 overall and 9-2 in the AAC. TWC is 7-10, 5-5.

Soccer

* UNC Greensboro beat UTC 3-0 in a rain-interrupted Southern Conference women's soccer game Friday night at Finley Stadium, dropping the Mocs to 3-9-2, 1-3-1 in the league. Caylin Prillaman scored and assisted on a Melanie Spensiero goal in the first half for UNCG (5-7-3, 3-1-1). The game was halted about five minutes into the second half. Georgia Brown scored in the 66th minute for the Spartans, who outshot the Mocs 18-10.

* Lee University won 3-1 in women's soccer and tied 1-1 in the men's game in a GSC home doubleheader Friday against West Alabama. Nicole Blanchard, Summer Lanter and Lauren Peters scored for the Lady Flames (6-3-2, 5-1) in their fifth straight win, and Laura Thacker, McKenzie Bricker and Marissa Villafuerte had assists. The Flames (7-2-2, 2-0-1) outshot the Tigers 19-9 and had a 12-2 margin in corner kicks but managed only an equalizer goal early in the second half from Jonathan Finlay, assisted by David Perez.

* The Sewanee women's soccer team edged visiting Rhodes 2-1 in overtime in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Friday, and the men won 1-0 on a Teddy Benjamin header from a Richard Huber pass late in regulation. The Rhodes women (7-4-1, 2-1) scored first, but Erin Gill tied the score in the first half and Kiley Ezzell netted a Katie Morrison assist in extra time for the Tigers (6-3-2, 2-0-1), who had 17-6 and 9-3 margins in shots and corners. There was a long weather delay in the second half.

* Grace Bartelt scored late to prevent a shutout for the Covenant women's soccer team in a 3-1 USA South home loss Friday to Methodist (7-4, 5-1), which had a 13-5 edge in shots. The Lady Scots are 5-4, 3-3. North Carolina Wesleyan (6-4-1, 4-0) won 1-0 over the Covenant men (3-7-1, 2-1-1).

Running

* Dalton State's Spencer Head was second in the men's 8k in 24:41.6 and freshman Emily Poole was eighth out of 206 women's runners in their divisions of the Royals Cross Country Challenge on Friday in Charlotte, N.C. While the DSC women were 12th out of 23 teams in the 5k, the men were third with Paul Patterson 11th individually. The Bryan and Tennessee Wesleyan men were 16th and 17th in the 24-team field. Lee competed with NCAA Division I and other Division II teams and finished fifth out of nearly 40 in each, led by the Flames' Seth Eagleson in seventh individually in the 8k and the Lady Flames' Jessica Childers and Audrey Smith in 15th and 18th in the 5k.

Basketball

* The Lee University men's basketball team was picked Friday to finish eighth in the 11-team GSC, and the Lady Flames were chosen by the women's coaches to finish third behind Union University and West Florida. Lee's Erin Walsh made the five-player preseason All-GSC women's team. "It is a great honor for Erin," Lady Flames coach Marty Rowe said in a Lee release. "She works hard every day, and hopefully this recognition will only help growing her confidence as a player." Alabama-Huntsville was the men's favorite, with West Georgia second and Union third.
