MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - A race car has crashed into wall at an American sprint car track in Pennsylvania, killing the driver.

The Cumberland County Coroner's Office says driver James Campbell Jr. died after striking a guard rail Friday night at the Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg.

The speedway canceled Friday night's program because of the accident.

Spectator Cassie Reese says a car going around the track began to spew smoke before flipping and catching on fire. She says the accident involved three other cars. She says emergency responders quickly extinguished the fire.

She says tearful spectators later realized the responders had "made a barrier around a vehicle."

The Williams Grove Speedway is a half-mile banked clay oval track. It has been home to American Sprint car racing since 1939.
