Robert Morris signs Grace's Herman

After a one-year detour through prep school and a change of heart from his original commitment last spring, former Grace Academy all-state guard Brandon Herman has signed a basketball scholarship with Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania.

Coming out of Grace Academy in 2010, the 6-foot-1 Herman turned down offers from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky and UNC-Wilmington and instead signed with Charis Prep School in Wilson, N.C. He averaged 17 points, six rebounds and five assists while playing point guard at Charis, helping to claim the National Prep School championship.

He had committed to North Carolina State in March, but after Sidney Lowe resigned as coach, Herman began the recruiting process anew and chose Robert Morris, which has played in the NCAA tournament the last two years.

"I'm excited because it's a place I can come in and not only play but make a major impact and win a lot of games," said Herman, who has enrolled for summer classes. "The coaching change at N.C. State sent me in a new direction, but I'm excited because I'm going to a system with an up-tempo style and its fits me perfectly."

As a senior at Grace, Herman averaged 27.4 points per game, leading the Golden Eagles to a Class A state-runner-up finish, and was the school's first TSSAA Mr. Basketball finalist. He is the school's career scoring leader with more than 2,400 points.

"I'm proud of the way he handled the whole recruiting process," Grace Academy coach Jon Mattheiss said. "He took his time to find a program that he felt like fits his style. He turned down some good offers and found a program that he believes he can blossom in."
