Brady on national team

Silverdale Baptist Academy two-way lineman Josh Brady has been selected to play for the 2011 U.S. under-15 national team chosen by USA Football.

Team USA will play in the inaugural Four Nations Cup to be held July 16-24 in Canton, Ohio. That is a weeklong celebration and competition centered on football skill development.

Each Four Nations Cup team will consist of 26 players. The U.S. team will be coached by former NFL running back Merril Hoge. Brady, a Silverdale eighth-grader who lives in Hixson, is the only player from Tennessee on the U.S. roster.

"He's a team player. There's no individuality about him," Seahawks coach Al Rogers said. "He's the type kid you want to become a leader for your team, and this will help him develop into that type leader we're looking for."

Three pick Maryville

Red Bank's Donovan Hargis, Chattanooga Christian's Alec Elsea and Copper Basin's Eric Sisson have committed to play football for NCAA Division III member Maryville College.

Hargis had 34 tackles (32 solos) with two interceptions and a fumble recovery last season for the Lions.

"Donovan was a two-year letterman and a team captain for us," Red Bank coach Tim Daniels said. "We're really proud of him, and I believe he will go on and do well at the next level."

Elsea, an all-district defensive tackle, was on the first Chargers football team in 2006.

"Alec exemplifies all the positive qualities that a coach wants in a player," CCS coach Barry Loyal said. "He was one of the most dependable players on our team. He was always leading by example and is a great role model for our younger players. We will miss Alec's contribution to our program on and off the field."

Sisson quarterbacked the Cougars to the state playoffs the last two years and was a Tennessee coaches association Class A all-state player. He was all-district in 2008 and '09 and the District 5-A offensive player of the year last fall, when he passed for a school-record 1,329 yards with 16 touchdowns and ran for 1,098 yards and 17 TDs.

He accounted for 59 TDs in his career, with 3,830 passing yards and 1,795 rushing.

Henderson to TWC

Soddy-Daisy's Kali Henderson has signed a softball scholarship with Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens.

Former Lady Trojans teammates Brandi Lasley, Brooke Ward and Taylor Wilson are freshmen at TWC. Henderson said having three friends there factored into her decision, but the reasons are greater than that.

"I really like the campus," said Henderson, who plans to study psychology. "I like all the girls I met and got along with them. It just fit well with me. It's really good."

The slugging first baseman was batting .416 with three homers and 23 RBIs heading into Thursday's game against Central. Last season Soddy-Daisy was the Class AAA state champion and Henderson was an all-state selection after batting .418 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs.

Tornado win Raoul Cup

The McCallie rowing team won for the 13th consecutive time and 15th in 19 meetings overall in the annual Raoul Cup competition against Baylor on Wednesday.

The Blue Tornado's varsity 8 of Jack Morrow, Drew Hettenbach, Fletcher Sims, Elliott Benton, Ellis Harr, Mike Ray, Christian Smith, Nick Cousar and August Wherry finished the 2,000-meter course on the Tennessee River in 6 minutes, 3.1 seconds in choppy water and gusty winds. Baylor's boat finished in 6:15.2. The McCallie varsity 8 are 21-1 this spring season, having lost only to an undefeated Cincinnati Rowing Club team in Ohio.

McCallie's second varsity 8 also won Wednesday, in 6:23 to Baylor's 7:02. That Tornado group of J.T. Wu, Hank Moore, Weston Mattice, Joseph LaRochelle, Randall Jackson, Sam Lyons, Carter Chapman, Sam Hornsby and Mike Petry are 11-0.
