NASHVILLE - Sixth-seeded Baylor erupted in the second half to beat fourth seed Pope John Paul II 3-0 in the first round of the Division II state boys' soccer tournament Saturday.

The Red Raiders scored six minutes into the second half on a penalty kick by Ramsey Seagle, after Max Kanerva was taken down in the box. The flow went back and forth after that, but again it was Baylor finishing a scoreless sequence with Kanerva drilling a 20-yard shot into the net from a Julian Baker pass in the 57th minute.

Baker assisted on a score by Lucas Baker in the 73rd minute.

Henrique Ribiero was credited with eight saves for the Red Raiders, who improved to 6-6-5.

"I am very proud of our guys to go on the road and get a huge win in the state tournament," Baylor coach Curtis Blair said. He cited Peter Bearisto, Jeff Shibata, Trantum Workman, Will Hitchcock, Ribiero and Julian Baker as playing "very well."
