Irish, Marion each has 4 all-state footballers

Nine high schools from the Chattanooga area had multiple players on the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's 2014 all-state football teams.

Notre Dame in Class 3A and Marion County in 2A each had four players earn all-state honors, and five area teams each placed three players in their respective classifications.

Defensive back Kareem Orr, one of the state's top prospects; athlete Auston Banks, who ran for 1,821 yards and 25 touchdowns; offensive lineman Robert Murphy, who allowed just one sack; and defensive lineman Joe Dossett all helped Notre Dame reach the state semifinals.

"For us, having gone 1-9 the year before we got there, this is another step in the process," Irish coach Charles Fant said. "This says a lot about the kids and coaching staff and administration to help us put together the type season we had.

"Having that many guys on the team is a tremendous achievement. It's incredible and is really exciting for all of us."

Those Notre Dame players are joined in 3A by Red Bank's trio of offensive lineman Myles Smith, defensive lineman Courtney Stamper, who had 11 sacks and 14 tackles for loss, and defensive back Malik Davis, who had 49 tackles and intercepted five passes, as well as McMinn Central offensive lineman Joe Croft, defensive lineman Josh Knight and linebacker Luke Davis, who had 128 tackles, nine sacks and three forced fumbles.

Marion County running back Blake Zeman, a Mr. Football finalist who ran for 1,747 yards, was joined by offensive lineman Cory Tucker, defensive back Alex Kirkendoll and kicker Christian Stephens, all helping the Warriors reach the 2A state title game. Zeman is the lone senior among that group that includes two sophomores (Kirkendoll, Tucker) and one junior.

"First of all, I'm happy for the kids," Warriors coach Ricky Ross said. "With anything, when you work hard you love to be told 'good job.' This is a confirmation of hard work for our kids.

"When I got here (last spring), I heard we were an old team. But we were really young. We only lost three on offense and four on defense, so it's always good to have that much talent coming back."

Also on the 2A team is Boyd-Buchanan linebacker Jake Harden, who had 95 tackles, 13 for lost yardage and three sacks.

A pair of local offensive linemen Signal Mountain Mr. Football finalist Harrison Moon and Hixson's Brody Gregory are on the 4A team. A handful of area athletes made the 5A team, including Ooltewah defensive back Rashaun Freeman, who returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns; linebacker Jeremiah Jackson, who had 119 tackles, 17 for loss and five sacks; and kicker Laslo Toser, the state's Mr. Football Kicker of the Year. Joining the Owls trio are Cleveland offensive lineman Koran Kennedy and linebacker Ben Wyrick and Rhea County offensive linemen Jacob Williams and C.J. Shelton, who helped the Eagles rush for an average of 366 yards per game.

Soddy-Daisy receiver Blake Smith, who led the area with 1,191 receiving yards, is the lone area player to make the 6A team, while Baylor and McCallie have three players each among the Division II-AA honorees.

Baylor quarterback Nick Tiano, a Mississippi State commitment, is joined from the Red Raiders by kicker Colin Brewer and linebacker Ryan Parker, who had 120 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and six sacks. McCallie placed running back Alex Trotter, a Mr. Football finalist who ran for 2,145 yards in 11 games, as well as offensive lineman Billy Boardman, who allowed just one sack in 177 passes, and defensive lineman Jay Roberts.
