Pedal to the metal

Austin Morrison turned in one of the most impressive single seasons in Northwest Whitfield history last season. Josh Robinson hopes the senior linebacker doesn't come close to his school-record 211 tackles this year - with one caveat.

"With all respect to Austin, we don't need anyone getting 200 tackles," Robinson said. "Of course, if we play 15 games, I won't mind it."

Morrison, due to injuries on the defensive line and a fast-paced Northwest offense that often failed to control the clock, was forced to use his athletic 6-foot-3, 205-pound body to make more plays than the Bruins wanted. This year there are a couple of reasons he won't have to do that.

"We're going to run the ball more, which should allow for us to control it more and give our defense a break," Robinson said. "Also, our defensive line will be better, so I expect Austin's numbers will drop, but I expect he'll be a better player because of it."

Robinson, a defensive-minded coach, also is excited about the possibilities of a full season with Morrison and fellow linebacker Cyrus Addison on the field at the same time. Addison, who had 122 tackles, was forced into action in the offensive backfield last year due to multiple injuries to teammates.

"They make a world of difference on the field when they're together," Robinson said. "Basically, to put Cyrus to the (open area of the) field and Austin in the middle, there are a lot of plays that are going to be made. Those are two of the best linebackers I've ever coached, and I expect them to have big years."

Just not as big as last season.

Route ’15: Injuries ruined a promising season a year ago, which ended with the Bruins falling in a mini-playoff game with a state spot at stake on the Monday following the end of the regular season. With what should be a strong running game and a defense full of elite tacklers, the team expects a return to the playoffs.

Taking the wheel: A familiar name will lead the offense as it switches to a more run-oriented attack. Luke Shiflett, Caleb’s sophomore brother, will head the attack after impressing in spot duty a year ago. Defensively, LBs Cyrus Addison and Austin Morrison are two of the most disruptive forces in the area, while Cameron Heard is a ball-hawk in the secondary.

Cruise control: The offensive line, an area of concern last season, returns starters at all five positions and six players with starting experience in Aaron Buckner, Noah Cox, Garrett Ford, Cyle Ledford, Tucker Pittman and Hawk Vance.

Pump the brakes: The Bruins have the beef up front to move the ball, but they lack proven playmakers on the outside with the losses of Jamon Horne and Clay Phillips, though speedster Will Blanchard had an impressive summer. The team wants to be more effective running the ball, but there’s not a lot of experience in the backfield, where Devonte Dunn, Derek Hammontree, Sebastian Orozco and Dominique Sistrunk are in competition.

Backseat driver: A rival coach said of the Bruins, “I think injuries killed them last year. We saw them in 7-on-7 this summer and they really have some nice athletes. If they stay healthy, there’s no reason they can’t get back to the playoffs.”
