Livingston Academy KOs Lady Irish

The timeout came 51 seconds into the game.

Wes Moore had to do it.

His Notre Dame girls' basketball players had a look in their eyes that he hadn't seen -- trepidation.

Visiting Livingston Academy forced two quick turnovers and scored off both in the opening minute of their Region 4-AA quarterfinal Monday night.

The Lady Irish calmed down a bit. But not enough to overcome a slow start and a sloppy finish in a 57-32 loss to the Lady Wildcats in Phifer Gym.

"We got sped up a little bit and we had turnovers that led to easy baskets, and I wanted to get the girls calmed down," Moore said. "The girls responded real well. We got down 12 but cut it to five at halftime."

The Lady Irish (19-10) were in the game, but not for all 32 minutes. Their season is over.

Livingston Academy (24-8) advances to the semifinals Wednesday against Murfreesboro's Central Magnet, which beat Chattanooga Christian 70-41.

"This group of (six) seniors play a little afraid to lose instead of being aggressive," Livingston coach Lesley Riddle said. "In the second half, we said, 'We'd better lay it on the line.'"

They did. The Lady Wildcats outscored Notre Dame 33-13 after taking a 24-19 lead into halftime.

"I think we got tired and our core five ran out of gas," Moore said. "That happens when you have three injured starters sitting on the bench."

Lady Wildcats senior Kailey Winningham led all players with 19 points, and Jameson Dailey added 10. Morgan Cantrell and Allison Hoffer led Notre Dame with eight points each.

"Our senior class has come a long way," Cantrell said, "because before my freshman year (Lady Irish) teams barely made it to region tournaments. I feel like this year we made a lot of progress because we lost a lot of players in the process and still made it here.

"I'm disappointed that we lost in the first round."
