CSAS doubles up, leading District 5-A

The Patriots won -- twice.

Now the District 5-A basketball championships likely will have to go through Arts & Sciences after it swept Boyd-Buchanan on Friday night, leaving the CSAS boys' and girls' teams atop the regular-season standings.

The Lady Patriots beat the Lady Bucs 50-45 by holding Boyd-Buchanan to six points in the final six minutes.

The Patriots followed with a more decisive 55-34 victory and held Boyd-Buchanan to two points in the entire fourth quarter.

"We're in a good spot," said boys' coach Mark Dragoo, whose son, Zach, coached the girls' team to victory. "We tried to push them out even though they can hit the open jumper, but we contested shots and that worked well.

"I do think we wore them down a bit."

CSAS junior Shunn Moorer -- who played on the varsity team as an eighth-grader -- returned from a shooting slump and led the Patriots (15-5, 5-1) with 23 points, including three 3-pointers. Josh Carter and Justin Brown each added eight points in the victory.

"We were being patient, reversing the ball and using our quickness," Moorer said. "We got open layups and open jump shots."

Post player Parris Clarke led the Bucs (8-16, 3-2) with 12 points but didn't score in the fourth quarter.

Josh Antwine had the only points for Boyd-Buchanan -- two free throws -- in the final eight minutes. The Bucs trailed 38-32 heading into the final stanza. They had 11 scoreless possessions and went until the 1:38 mark without a point. By then, CSAS had opened a 20-point lead.

"For the last week we've emphasizing talking on defense," Moorer said. "Now that we're talking, we see what we can do."

Boyd-Buchanan had no answer for an odd 3-2 zone defense that CSAS used for most of the game, especially when outside shots hit more iron than cotton.

"It didn't go like we planned it," Boyd-Buchanan coach Zach Roddenberry said. "We were not as on our game as they were tonight, and it showed. Any time you get beat by 20, it's not a good feeling, and when it happens in district, it's even worse.

"They were the better team."

CSAS also had the better girls' team Friday.

The Lady Patriots (14-6, 5-1) turned a two-point deficit at halftime into a five-point victory and also lead District 5-A. They have a one-game lead on Boyd-Buchanan (14-8, 4-2).

Lennex Walker led all scorers with 19 points for CSAS, and Keturah Billen added 14. Marisa McCalla led the Lady Bucs with 17 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Madison Wright had 14 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots.

CSAS trailed 24-22 at halftime, then led 37-36 at the end of three quarters. A jumper by Chandler Hiland gave Boyd-Buchanan a 39-37 lead with less than six minutes to play. Then CSAS went on a 9-0 run, capped by a three-point play from Aizha Little resulting in a six-point lead with 61 seconds on the clock.

"We knew that we had to keep fighting and we had to box out, rebound and defend the baseline," Walker said. "Our defense allowed us to create turnovers, and our ball pressure led to easy fastbreak points.

"We lost at their place, so this is a good win."
