California at Berkeley has become the premier men's swimming university in the nation under coach David Durden, with three NCAA team championships and three runner-up finishes in the last six years.

Dalton High School's Ethan Young is headed there on a scholarship.

The Georgia high school swimmer of the year made it official during the early signing period.

Young has made the Georgia all-state swim team the last three years. He finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100 butterfly in the GHSA state meet in 2012-13 and first in the 100 back with a state-record time and second again in the 100 fly in 2013-14. Then he was first in both last season as a junior, when he reset his 100 back record.

"Ethan Young is a phenomenal student-athlete and competitor. He is very dynamic to watch in the water," Dalton coach Sharlinda Haight said in an email. "He works very hard in all areas of his life to be the best student-athlete."

And Young has been doing it for years. He set national 13-14 age-group records for the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes.

He has qualified for the 2016 Olympic trials in the 100- and 200-meter backstrokes and has been on the USA national junior team the last two years. He was on the United States Junior Pan Pac team that competed in Hawaii in September 2014 and on the NSCA All-American team that went against Europe's top 18-under swimmers in Ireland in April.

Young also is a 2015 USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

"Ethan has an amazing ability to focus. Once he sets his mind on a target, he hits it," said Jason Meszaros, head coach of the Carpet Capital Aquatics Club.
