Signal Mountain girls look to change golf sign

The road sign near the top of Signal Mountain seems to change every year.

The letters declare every state high school golf championship that Signal Mountain's Lady Eagles have won. That's five of the last six years, resulting in high maintenance for the sign makers.

They're ready to do it again.

The Lady Eagles will play in the Class A/AA state tournament today and Wednesday at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester. Signal Mountain is seeded No. 3 based on region tournament scores.

"They seem to be pretty happy and pretty loose," coach Rodney Mitchell said of senior Bethany Burns and sophomore Taylor Gardner in addition to Haley Buttram. "We're happy to be here. If we have a chance to play for it, wer're going to go for it."

The Lady Eagles will be joined in Manchester by the Lady Buccaneers of Boyd-Buchanan, who won the Region 3-A/AA tournament at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay, where the McMinn Central guys prevailed. The Notre Dame boys won in a 4-A/AA playoff last Monday at Fall Creek Falls to earn their spot at Willowbrook.

Signal Mountain senior Jacob Bailey will be playing as an individual.

"We have a chance," Notre Dame coach Jeff Fisher said. "We're not exactly contenders, but we're not horrible. I'd like our top three to play up to their capability and steal another good score.

"Going to state is always fun."

None of the four teams representing the Chattanooga area are favored this week against competition from across the state, but past results don't mean anything now.

"Who knows?" Boyd-Buchanan coach Ed Connelly said. "The girls might have some real good scores."
