All Ty Boeck wanted was a chance at redemption. After dropping a certain touchdown pass early in the third quarter of Saturday night's Best of Preps jamboree, the Soddy-Daisy junior made amends by hauling in a tough over-the-shoulder catch and outrunning the East Ridge defense for a 70-yard score.

That touchdown came just after the Trojans defense had recorded a safety, and it proved to be the deciding score in Soddy-Daisy's 8-6 victory.

"It was embarrassing to drop that first one out here in front of all these people, so I wanted another shot to make a play," said Boeck, who was also in on several tackles from his linebacker position. "We've worked hard in the weight room to be better defensively, and other than one play it was good to see that work pay off."

That one play was a 55-yard TD run by Pioneers junior running back Lorenzo Stewart. It came with just four minutes remaining to pull East Ridge within two, but the Trojans defense held on the two-point try.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Stewart was playing in place of all-state runner Traneil Moore, who will miss the first few games while recovering from a knee injury. Stewart, who is also the Pioneers' defensive playmaker at middle linebacker, took advantage of his opportunity with several nice runs.

"He'll be our workhorse for a while," Pioneers coach Tim James said. "The first few weeks will be tough on him because he'll have to play both ways a lot."

* Baylor 14, Notre Dame 0: It took the Baylor offense two possessions to find its rhythm, but the offensive line made things easy the rest of the way. The first touchdown was set up when Red Raiders linebacker Charlie Glascock recovered a fumble at the Irish 43; six plays later, sophomore quarterback Lorenzo White scored on a 2-yard run.

Baylor's next possession was capped with an 8-yard scoring run by junior Brendon Harris. That TD was set up by a 30-yard run from Kalvin Watson - one of three runs by the senior that covered 15-plus yards - and a 35-yard pass from Trusten McArtor to Tate Prater.

"We came in just wanting to play hard and execute, and I think we did that," said Harris, a four-star defensive back college prospect with offers already from Tennessee, Clemson, South Carolina, LSU and Vanderbilt. "I feel like most people know about my skills on defense, so I like getting to show what I can do on offense too."

The highlight for the Irish came on the first play of the quarter when Andrew Banks intercepted a McArtor pass near midfield. But the Baylor defense never budged.

* Red Bank 21, Walker Valley 0: The Lions had a field day and were feeling pretty good about themselves until coaches told them they had played the Mustangs' No. 2 and No. 3 squads. Still, Red Bank looked good, especially defensive end Jamel Davis, defensive backs Mike Porter and Cole Seeley and linebacker Ivan Young. The Lions got two TDs from Calvin Jackson, one a 66-yarder.

* Ooltewah 7, Central 0: Ooltewah's first play from scrimmage was a 25-yard pass from quarterback Collin Thurman to Peter Dyr, and then Cam Turner ripped off a 9-yard gain. Turner finished off the Owls' first possession with a scoring run. The defense took it from there, but coach Mac Bryan will have plenty of subject material from the 30-minute scrimmage to keep the Owls running and hustling through Thursday.

* McMinn County 14, East Hamilton 0: Zane Byas finished what he started to lead the Cherokees. After intercepting a Hurricanes pass on the first play, Byas capped a 50-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard TD run, and the Cherokees defense never allowed East Hamilton to cross midfield. The Cherokees added another short TD run late for the final margin.
