GPS was the only team to come away 2-0 after Tuesday's TSSAA Hall of Champions girls' basketball games at Soddy-Daisy.

The Bruisers defeated Red Bank 50-27 in the second game of the day and beat Soddy-Daisy 44-23 in the nightcap.

"I loved the energy that we showed," GPS coach Wes Moore said. "We showed a lot of fight and a lot of scrappiness tonight. The other big thing is we really played as a team."

The Lady Trojans and Lady Irish both were 1-1. Soddy-Daisy opened with a 46-41 victory over Notre Dame, which beat Red Bank 73-46 in the third game.

* GPS 50, Red Bank 27: The Bruisers took control early, taking the lead for good at 5-4 on the way to a 25-8 advantage late in the first half.

The go-ahead points came on a 3-point shot by Brooke McCurdy, who made six in the game and finished with 24 points.

* GPS 44, Soddy-Daisy 23: GPS led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter, then outscored the Lady Trojans 13-2 in the second. A 17-5 advantage in the third pushed the lead to 36-12 heading to the fourth.

"We really stepped up on defense and were able to put together some stops," Moore said. "And we made a few 3-pointers and kind of opened it up a little bit."

J.J. Dunigan's 13 points led the Bruisers against the Lady Trojans.

"That first game was a long battle," Soddy-Daisy coach Drew Lyness said. "The game went on forever. I think the second game our legs were pretty much dead. We don't have a ton of depth. The first game we played our starters the majority of the time.

"We've got six girls who have never played varsity before. This gave them a chance to be on the floor in a varsity game and see the speed of the game. We were able to play those girls a lot of minutes, especially in the second game."

* Soddy-Daisy 46, Notre Dame 41: The Lady Trojans led 19-6 early in the second quarter before the Lady Irish battled back to within 29-28 going into the fourth.

Notre Dame was again within a point twice in the final period, the last at 35-34 when MeMe Siler scored on a drive with 3:46 to play. But the Lady Trojans held off the Lady Irish with 11-of-20 free-throw shooting in the last 3:25.

Summer Ghaffari paced Soddy-Daisy with 19 points.

* Notre Dame 73, Red Bank 46: The first quarters were the defining periods for the Lady Irish. They scored six points in the first quarter in their loss and 25 in the first against Red Bank.

Kee Kee Ball led Notre Dame with 18 points - 14 in the second half. Laura Rabuano added 15, including three 3-point goals.

Bella Bombassi's 12 points topped the Lady Irish in their first game.

"We've got some new faces out there," Notre Dame coach Jason Hill said. "We're playing without four seniors we had out there last year. We're putting a couple of freshmen in the lineup. We're just seeing where we're at. We played all 10 girls. We threw some different lineups out there. We had five guards out there at one point. We were just mixing things up, seeing what we've got right now.

"It's all about getting ready for that district."

Layla Babb scored 12 in Red Bank's first game and 14 in its second. Haley Claiborne's points against Notre Dame came on four 3-pointers.

Red Bank coach Bailey McGinnis said she thought her team played well in spurts, but the group has some things to work on to lengthen those periods of playing well. The team is expecting to get post player Zanobia Pratt, who rolled an ankle, back next week.

"We've got to unselfishly look at ourselves and figure out what we need to work on," McGinnis said. "Not 'She did this or she did that.' As a team we're just really raw right now.

"Our district isn't super easy. There are a couple of teams that are going to push us. These were good games to get us ready for our district."
