Boyd-Buchanan, CCS, McMinn County at home for soccer sectionals

Boyd-Buchanan will be seeking to go where no other Lady Buccaneers soccer team has been.

They're looking to advance to the Class A/AA state tournament.

The Lady Bucs reached the sectional two years ago but fell short of a state-tournament spot with a loss to Notre Dame.

Already, though, there are firsts for the program in 2016, including a region championship.

"These last three seasons have been pretty special for this group. They just keep on breaking school records," coach Todd Ledbetter said.

It is Notre Dame they'll face at 7 tonight, the Lady Bucs' first sectional on their new artificial turf field.

The turf, though, shouldn't be a problem for Notre Dame, which also played on a big turf field Thursday in the Region 4 championship match at Chattanooga Christian. The Lady Irish lost that one but extended the 2015 state runners-up to overtime before falling 2-1.

Boyd-Buchanan also is coming off a close-scoring game. Like CCS, it was hard-pressed for a 2-1 win over Arts & Sciences, which will play at CCS at 4 this afternoon.

"You play a team three times and it seems that third one is most always a toss-up," Ledbetter said.

He had been the one earlier this week telling his assistants to remain patient, but Thursday his assistants were telling him the same thing.

"I was thinking, 'I don't know. This may not be our night.' We missed a couple of shots in front of the box," Ledbetter said. "We made some big adjustments, and when we took the lead I felt like we had it."

While those four are settling the area A/AA state representation, McMinn County will be at home at 7 p.m. against Siegel in AAA and Baylor and Girls Preparatory School are playing Division II-AA quarterfinals in Memphis this afternoon. GPS will be at Hutchison at 3:30 p.m. EDT and Baylor at Briarcrest at 4.

McMinn last won a region championship in 2005, and the last time the Lady Cherokees gained the sectional round was 2006. Ten years later they're back after winning a penalty-kick shootout Thursday night in a rain-delayed match at Cookeville.

Notre Dame is fielding a somewhat young team - its record is 9-11-2 - but coach Jim Schermerhorn is familiar with the postseason. The Lady Irish won the A/AA state title in 2014.

"Based on what I've seen of comparative scores and talking with other coaches, I think this match will be very competitive and very even," Ledbetter said.

"Notre Dame did very well against us. They surprised me with how much energy they had after playing an overtime game on Tuesday," CCS coach Cal Sneller said. "They've had two straight overtime games but they surprised us, so I would expect them to be ready."

Sneller plans for his team to be ready for CSAS.

"I think they're improved. I know they have a couple of good athletes at different spots. We're certainly not looking past them," he said.
