Congratulations are in order for Signal Mountain's high school boys' and girls' golf teams, and Hixson's boys' team. They've already won their district championships.

The only difference is, Hixson's boys haven't played in their tournament yet.

The TSSAA postseason begins Monday for two of the Class A/AA districts in the Chattanooga area. District 7 held its tournament Thursday at Fall Creek Falls, which is where the Eagles and Lady Eagles won their titles. District 6 will hold its tournament at Moccasin Bend starting at 10 a.m. Monday.

The Wildcats are the only boys' team entered. Marion County's Derrick LeCompte and Van Buren's Jason Hale are entered as individuals.

The girls' tournament consists of Hixson vs. Sale Creek. Every District 6 competitor will move on to the Region 3 tournament Thursday at Chatata Valley in Cleveland.

"The worst thing we can do is go out and have all of them think, 'We don't have to shoot too good because we're all going to the region anyway,'" Hixson coach Earl Cornette said. "The region is only two days later. You want to have a positive feeling about your game going into that."

Hixson is led by No. 1 player Jared Thomas. His 2-over-par 74 in the City Prep tournament Sept. 7 was only two strokes behind the winner and a personal best at The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay.

"He hits it long and has a good feel," Cornette said. "He's averaging about 38 strokes per nine holes, maybe a little lower after that round in the City Prep. He's kind of an easy-going guy. I told him at the beginning of the year, 'If you want to play past high school, you've got to do something. This is your time.'"

The rest of the Region 3 field will come from Monday's District 5 tournament at Chatata Valley, scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Boyd-Buchanan's boys and Sequoyah's girls were last year's team champions.

Sequoyah should challenge for the girls' title again. Another girls' challenger, Boyd-Buchanan, features young but experienced players Lydia Campbell and Zacori Hill.

McMinn Central's boys finished three shots behind Boyd-Buchanan last year but beat the Buccaneers two days later for the region title on a rainy day at Bear Trace.

"I feel like it's a little more wide open in this one," said McMinn Central coach Doug Armstrong, who graduated two off last year's boys' team but returns No. 1 player John Houk. "I think Boyd-Buchanan would probably have to be the favorite.

"We played really well early on, but we haven't the last couple of weeks. Now that it's postseason, I hope we pick it back up."

Big day for D-II teams

The Division II-AA East/Middle Region tournament is also Monday. It's scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Eastern, with the boys teeing off on No. 1 and the girls getting started on No. 10 at The Bear Trace at Tims Ford in Winchester.

The top four boys' and girls' teams, along with the top three boys and girls not on those teams, move on to the state tournament the following Monday and Tuesday at WillowBrook in Manchester.

"A lot of people don't realize, our season comes down to one day. You don't play well that day, you go home," Baylor coach Gary Partrick said of the region tournament.

Father Ryan's boys won the team region championship last season. McCallie finished second and Baylor was third, although the Red Raiders went on and won the state championship.

"There are seven teams and they can all play," Partrick said of Monday's boys' field. "And this year there may be more balanced teams than there's ever been.

"On the girls' side, you've got five teams playing for four spots. Flip a coin. It could be exciting. It could be heartbreaking, depending on what side you're on."

GPS, which finished third at state a year ago, likes its chances. Led by McKenzie Frizzell and Hannah Prescott, the Bruisers were this season's City Prep champions.

"I feel good about GPS," said Rob Riddle, coach of McCallie and GPS. "We've been playing well all year, although we did not play well this past Thursday at The Farm against Baylor. They hit it in the rough a lot. It was set up collegiately. It challenged them. We just need to execute a little bit better."
