Northwest Whitfield's "Baby Bruins" completed a magical season Saturday night with a 3-2 win over Chestatee in the GHSA Class AAAA state championship soccer game at Mercer University in Macon, securing the program's first state title.

Northwest, which started seven freshmen in its five playoff games, was down 2-1 late in the second half until Sergio Soria scored off a pass from freshman Fabian Navarro with 3:30 remaining to tie it.

A minute and a half later, Navarro intercepted a Chestatee pass and scored unassisted for the title-winning goal.

"I've never seen anything like it," Northwest coach Ryan Scoggins said. "It's so hard to score in soccer, especially when you trail with just a few minutes left. It was the appropriate way to win it. That's what we've done all year and it was a miracle-type of thing. It's unbelievable.

"To look over there and see those seven freshmen and for them to follow the lead of a couple of seniors and two juniors is amazing."

Anthony Ramirez scored the game's first goal early in the second half, but Chestatee scored the next two to take the lead until the final few minutes.
