Lourenco chosen for Potter Cup

Orlando Lourenco has been selected to play in the Potter Cup tournament, which starts Friday at Real Club de Polo in Barcelona, Spain.

The Potter Cup is a 45-and-over international team competition played between nations. Lourenco, who became naturalized U.S. citizen 10 years ago, will play for the United States.

"It's such an honor," he said. "When they asked if I would go represent the country, I was honored. It's so unique and a great opportunity."

Lourenco, 46, will get the opportunity to play both singles and doubles in the tournament, which is a clay-court event. The United States will play Italy in the first round.

"There just aren't many clay courts around here," Lourenco said. "The closest training center is in Jacksonville. "The clay courts play differently depending on how much water is on the courts -- the more water, the faster they play."

The Spainerds received the top seed going into the tournament and Lourenco says that the tournament "suits European players better.

"They get the opportunity to play on clay courts more often," he said. "It's going to be a very competitive tournament, but not cut-throat.

"I'm just looking forward to getting out, playing the game and representing my country."
