Dalton State, Nix leading SSAC golf tourney and more Chattanooga region sports news

The Dalton State men's golf team leads the 11-team Southern States Athletic Conference tournament by three strokes over 2014 NAIA champion Coastal Georgia heading into the final round today at Montgomery (Ala.) Country Club. The Roadrunners' Levi Nix is 6 under par through two rounds and owns the lead over teammate Sean Elliott by two strokes, with the team at 559. Nix and Elliott shot 66 and 67 Tuesday. Heritage High School graduate Hunter Cornelius has the fourth best score for Coastal and shares ninth place at 143 with Anthony D'Angelo of DSC, which has Chase Jones tied for 16th at 146.

* After taking the first-round lead in the Rhodes Mirimichi Spring Classic on Monday, Sewanee senior golfer Saer Brown finished with a final nine-hole score of 40 and wound up ninth at 109 with the Tigers fourth as a team. Timothy Walters and Cole Parrish tied for 21st at 112, and Alex Wedding was 28th at 115.

* Georgia Northwestern's Bobcats are a distant second to Darton in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Region XVII tournament heading into the final round in Albany. But they are the top Division III team, by 49 shots over Georgia Military, and are all but certain of playing in the NJCAA nationals June 2-6 in Chautauqua, N.Y. Chase Cole leads GNTC at 148 with Jordan Estes at 151 and Lanier Guest at 153.

Baseball

* Trenton Hill was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Siosi Poti was 2-for-5 with a run scored as the Lee University baseball team won 4-2 in a nonconference game Tuesday at Trevecca Nazarene. Four pitchers for Lee (24-15-1) held the Trojans (21-14) to seven hits and struck out 10.

* Wes Peacock homered twice and drove in four runs as Emory won 10-0 in NCAA Division III baseball Tuesday at Covenant. Philip Maldari was 2-for-2 and scored three times and Nick Chambers was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Emory (23-11), while pitchers Jackson Weeg (9-1) and Kyle Monk held the Scots to six hits. Scott Gillespie was 2-for-4 for Covenant (14-18).

Softball

* Young Harris College beat visiting Lee University 10-2 and 11-3 in nonconference softball Tuesday, but Amanda Lynn was 5-for-7 with an RBI and a run in the two games for Lee (28-17) and Kaylie Drew was 1-for-2 in the second game with her 14th home run of the season. Dominique Hannah was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game one. Truett-McConnell is 30-12.

* Maryville College defeated Tenessee Temple 6-3 and 9-7 in softball Tuesday, but Sloane Woodard was 5-for-8 with three runs scored and an RBI in defeat in the doubleheader. Raven Pope was 4-for-4 with two doubles in the second gfame, when Jillian McGill matched Woodard with three hits and Marissa Murray and Cayley Shoemaker each was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Temple (5-21). Murray homered. She and Carley Daniel each was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game.
