UTC grad Bramblett goes to work for Marshall and more Chattanooga region sports news

Recent University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduate and women's basketball player Destiny Bramblett was announced Thursday as director of basketball operations for the Marshall University women's program. Bramblett, an integrated studies major at UTC, will be in charge of team travel arrangements, academics, community service and on-campus operations for head coach Matt Daniel, according to a Marshall release. She is from Radcliff, Ky. "I'm overwhelmed with excitement," Bramblett said in the release. "This is where I'm supposed to be, and Coach Daniel and his staff are welcoming me with open arms." Said Daniel: "I'm very excited to bring young energy, once again, into our program. Destiny has been a great ambassador, and her eagerness and willingness to help in any facet is what made her stand out as a prime candidate." Marshall went 17-15 last season.

Golf

* Lee University's Taylor Davis was one of 91 NCAA Division II men's golfers announced Wednesday as Cleveland/Golf Srixon All-America Scholars for 2015, and the 17 NAIA honorees included Dalton State's Levi Nix and Chase Jones and Coastal Georgia's Hunter Cornelius from Heritage High School. Davis, already a PING third-team All-American, had a 72.5 stroke average this past year with a 3.89 grade point average. All-America Scholars must be juniors or seniors who competed in 50 percent of their teams' competitive rounds and had cumulative GPAs of at least 3.2. For DII the stroke average must be under 78. The cutoff for NAIA is 77.

* Lee golfer Peyton Sliger tied for second at 2-over-par 146 for 36 holes - 12 strokes behind medalist Hunter Richardson of Clarksville - in the Tennessee Match Play Championship at The Grove in College Grove, and former Tennessee Wesleyan player Keoni Vidrine from Delano shared seventh at 148. Former Ooltewah resident Nick Blakely of Nashville and Chattanooga Christian standout Lake Johnson were in the group of six tied for 13th at 151, and Blakely will play in the round of 16 in match play today. TWC golfer Evan Ball from Polk County tied for 23rd at 153, and four other area products - Wil Manuel, Andrew Horn, Justin McMasters and Brooks Thomas - made the top 35 at 154, 155, 156 and 156. In Senior Match Play qualifying, Tom Baird of Signal Mountain tied for ninth at 157 and TWC coach Mike Poe tied for 16th (but missed out on match play) at 161. Germantown's Tim Jackson won by six strokes at 140.

Softball

* The Lighthouse Lookouts/Athletic Shop slowpitch team from Chattanooga will represent the area today through Sunday in the Softball Players Association Men's World Championships 2015 Major/Major Plus World Tournament. The Lighthouse Lookouts are one of 15 major teams in the 50-over category, which includes nine major-plus entries, and there are separate 55s and 60s age groups. The Lookouts play pool games today at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. against Lee's Smoothies from Indiana and Arkansas II, and their division also includes teams from as far away as Colorado, Texas, New York and Florida. Bracket play starts this evening.
