Sewanee has five women's lacrosse all-region players and more Chattanooga region sports news

Junior defender Alexis Crittenden and high-scoring seniors Sally Anne Greenwood and Ellie Murphy represented the Sewanee women's lacrosse team on the IWLCA all-region first team, and teammates Mallory Grimm and Relly King were second-team selections. The Tigers went 17-2 this season, losing 18-4 Sunday at Washington & Lee in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. King scored two of the goals, Greenwood and Katie Riddle adding the others while Crawford Horan made 10 saves. Murphy was the Southern Athletic Association offensive player of the year with 36 goals and 34 assists, after Greenwood earned that honor in 2014. Greenwood had 42 goals and 29 caused turnovers this season, when classmate Grimm had 56 goals and 28 assists and freshman King had 50 goals and 17 assists.

Auto Racing

* Steve Dowdy from Ringgold won the Super Pro class and $2,000 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He won in a dragster powered by a modified 454 Chevrolet engine with a 5.01-second run on a 5.00 dial. Cody Holloway of Whitwell was second with a 5.78 run on a 5.78 dial in his 1964 Chevy II. Marty Goldsmith of Ringgold won the Foot Brake class for the second week in a row with a 7.99 on a 7.99 in his 1974 Plymouth Duster; Calhoun's David Bigham was second. Khloe Wilson, a 10-year-old Flintstone girl, was the Junior Dragster winner with Kahole Winters of Soddy-Daisy second. Kevin Roden of Cleveland repeated with the meet's low elapsed time (4.48) and top speed (156.o5 mph) in his supercharged Chevy dragster.

* John Burger survived 100 laps starting with 18 cars and a long red-flag delay for a car fire Saturday night to win the first 100-lap Enduro race at Sweetwater's I-75 Raceway. The red flag was waved on lap 73. Mike Hale was second with Steve Moore third. Ruben Mayfield won the Limited Late Model race from the pole, and Anthony White was second with Heath Hindman third. Other winners were John Smith in Sportsman, Danny Bray in B-Hobby, Michael Barnard in Thunder, David Singleton in Four Cylinder and Kane Pelfrey in Front Wheel Drive. Their runners-up were Nick Bowling, Nathan Adams, Jonathan Hampton, Rocky McNabb and Tyler Tidwell, respectively.

Golf

* Paul Apyan from Chattanooga shot a 4-under-par 68 and was one of seven golfers advancing to sectional qualifying from a U.S. Open local qualifier Monday at The Legends at Chateau Elan at Braselton, Ga. Another Chattanoogan, Sam Bedwell, lost in a playoff for the two alternate spots after being among six shooting 70s. Gainesville (Ga.) High School senior Spencer Ralston was the medalist at 67. Another local qualifier is being held today at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, with Chattanooga's Ryan Cusack, Ringgold's Jeffrey Cornelius, Dalton's David Noll Jr., Davis Kirk and Chase Miller and Chattanooga Best of Preps banquet speaker John Smoltz among the 132 players vying for seven sectional spots and two alternate positions. Smoltz will be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in July. The U.S. Open is set for June 15-21 in Washington state.

Baseball

* The Chattanooga State baseball team will open against Georgia regular-season and tournament champion Darton State in the four-team NJCAA East Central District tournament Thursday at 11 a.m. at Morristown, Tenn. Chattanooga State (30-11) was the runner-up to nationally fifth-ranked host Walters State (51-10) in both the TCCAA regular season and the Region VII tournament. Darton State's Cavaliers are 37-17 after defeating South Georgia State 4-2 and 19-3 in their last two games of the GCAA tourney last weekend in Albany, Ga.

Softball

* Bracket host Auburn-Montgomery scored a run in the first inning and two in the fourth and downed fourth-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 in an NAIA softball national tournament opening-round series Monday night. Stephanie Bridges was 2-for-3 for Wesleyan (31-8), which faces Georgia Gwinnett (36-15) this afternoon, but no other Lady Bulldog had a hit. AUM (40-8) had only four hits off Brittany Kilduff, who struck out nine batters. Gwinnett lost 4-0 to No. 2 seed Davenport.
