Area Sports Notes: Lee season ends in overtime loss to Valdosta State

The Lee University women's basketball season ended Saturday night with a 63-57 overtime loss to Valdosta State in the second round of the Division II regional at Jackson, Tenn. VSU, the No. 7 seed, scored the last nine points in regulation and outscored the sixth-seeded Lady Flames (24-8) 12-6 in OT. Erin Walsh led Lee with 13 points and ended her career with 1,824 - sixth most in program history. Carrie Cheeks added 11 points and Lindsey Roddy had nine.

-Times Free Press columnist Mark Wiedmer will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. He will be discussing the NCAA basketball tournament. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.

Softball

-The UTC softball team won 7-5 over Central Connecticut State in eight innings and 12-11 over Rider on Saturday in Clearwater, Fla., making the Mocs (11-13) 3-1 in the USF Under Armour Invitational. Devan Brown scored three times in each game, including the go-ahead run in the eighth against CCSU. Alyssa Coppinger was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Brook Womack was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Ashley Conner also had two hits, while Heidi Hall got the win and Allison Swinford the save with a combined 5 2/3 innings of two-hit relief pitching. Against Ryder, Womack was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Brown was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, Coppinger was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Conner was 2-for-3 with three runs and Cameren Swafford was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

-Kaleigh Wynne went 8-for-9 with five runs scored and Kiley Longmire was 5-for-5 with four walks, six runs and two RBIs as Chattanooga State completed a TCCAA sweep at Roane State with six-inning 11-2 and 12-3 wins Saturday. Wynne pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and went 4-for-4 with two homers, a double, four RBIs and four runs in the first game, and Shelby Penning was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Madison Tidmore was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run in game two, when Jenna Edwards pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts for the Lady Tigers (16-8, 7-1).

-After losing 1-0 on a walk-off homer and winning 11-2 Friday at Mississippi College, Lee lost 8-4 in the GSC series finale Saturday. Leigh Beatenbough lost a five-hitter in the series opener and Shonna Penney won a five-hitter in game two for Lee (12-13, 5-7), when Kayla Louie had three hits, Zoe Miller batted in three runs and Taylor Moran scored three. Moran homered, Beatenbough doubled in a run and Bailey Church added a two-run homer in the Lady Flames' four-run fourth innning Saturday. Five the Choctaws' eight runs were unearned.

-Bryan College lost 7-3 and 7-6 in AAC softball Friday at Montreat and lost 2-1 and won 5-2 Saturday at St. Andrews. Heidi Smith had the only RBI for the Lady Lions (6-16, 3-3) in the first game Friday and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in game two, when Courtney Petty, Hannah O'Shields and Ashley Brown had two hits each, Petty scoring twice. Pitchers Lindsey Dunn and Allison Walker combined for a five-hitter in Bryan's low-scoring loss Saturday, and Petty and Olivia Johnson did the pitching in the victory, which featured Kimberly McKernie going 3-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. O'Shields also had two RBIs, and Brown was 2-for-3.

-Covenant College lost 7-2 and won 7-5 in Saturday's USA South doubleheader at LaGrange. Carlin Labuzan was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and Shade Epes had the other RBI hit in the loss for the Lady Scots (12-12, 4-2). Labuzan had the winning two-run double in the seventh inning of game two, when Epes was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored three runs and Madelyn Ames and Erika Mast each was 2-for-3, Ames scoring twice.

-Charlsey Shirey got the only hit for Sewanee (2-10, 1-5 SAA) in a 7-0 loss Saturday to visiting Centre.

-Cleveland State won 3-2 and lost 4-1 on Friday and fell 9-0 and 8-0 on Saturday in TCCAA games at Motlow. Shiann Stockwell pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts in the win for the Lady Cougars (8-9, 2-6), and she had two hits along with Macy Bryant, who scored the first run and doubled in the other two.

Track & Field

-Led by Emily Poole and Rebekah Wich as the top two finishers in the 5000-meter run, the UTC women's track and field team opened its outdoor season Saturday in the Gamecock Quad Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State at Oxford, Ala. The Mocs set seven personal records, including Poole's 17:28.80 and Wich's 18:29.96 in the 5k. Abby Bateman and Nicole Buerhle set PRs in finishing second and third in the 800, where Ashlynd Broling was sixth, and Brianna Nelson, Haley Morris and Hannah Caldwell were second through fourth with PRs in the 1500, with Sophia Neglia sixth and Julia Henderson seventh. UTC's Rebekah Hampton was third in long jump and triple jump and fifth in the 100 hurdles, and Taylor Grayson was third in shot put and seventh in hammer throw. Katie Coker was fifth in the 400 and Rebekah Bryant was sixth in long jump.

-Lee University's Emily Buwalda finished fifth in the women's 800-meter run in the NCAA Division II indoor track and field meet Saturday night in Pittsburg, Kan., and Lee's Josiah Brooks was eighth in the men's triple jump. Buwalda's time was 2:09.07; Brooks' distance was 15.35 meters (50 feet, 4 1/2 inches).

Baseball

-Lee lost 11-10 in GSC baseball Saturday at Mississippi College, which won two of the three games in the series. For Lee (10-13, 4-5), Jordan Howard, Spencer Mossburg and Chase Gadau each homered and singled, Gadau with three RBIs and Mossburg matching Tyler Payne with two, and Dalton Ney was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs like Howard. Miguel Pimentel had two hits and an RBI.

-Drew Mancuso was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored and Jared Demkowicz was 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs as Sewanee completed a three-game sweep of the Mississippi University for Women's baseball team with an 18-10 win Saturday. Five others had two RBIs each for the Tigers (4-12): Jake Galanek, Beau Allen, Josh Roberts, Shane Smith and Chris McNulty.

-Despite four RBIs from Joey Roberson and three hits and three runs scored from Logan Peterson, Cleveland State lost 13-10 in its TCCAA series finale Saturday at Motlow State (13-10, 3-3). Roberson was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and Cameron Payne and Brandon Mason each walked three times and scored twice for the Cougars (14-7, 4-2).

Lacrosse

-Lee's second-year women's lacrosse team lost 24-16 in a Gulf South Conference match Saturday at Montevallo, despite five goals from Emma Hill and four from Becca Broadwick. Kaylyn Dillon and Hannah Rotello each scored two for Lee (4-3, 0-3). Janey Johnson scored six for Montevallo (4-4, 1-2).
