Barwick-LaFayette Airport opens new terminal

The Barwick-LaFayette Airport recently opened a new 2,600-square-foot general aviation terminal.

Airport manager Phil Shelton said the new terminal includes a flight planning area, a crew rest space, a large common area, a conference room for 12-14 people, a break room and a manager's office.

"For the aviation community it's pretty much the front door to Walker County," he said. "It really gives a nice impression when you first come in."

As Northwest Georgia's only airport in Walker, Catoosa and Dade counties, he said making the new terminal attractive and up to date was important for the entire community.

"We have corporate aircraft flying in quite often, bringing in people who are looking to locate their business in Walker County and we want to give a good impression," said Shelton.

The previously used terminal was lacking space and showing the wear and tear since it opened in 1975, he said. One of the terminal's interior features is photography of local landmarks like the Marsh House and the courthouse.

With as many as 10-12 flights coming and going daily and 70 aircraft based at the airport, Shelton said he's excited about the new terminal's impression on people using the airport.

"Aviation is an integral part of business in this day and time," he said. "It saves people time and money and you need a place to land."
