Alvin Townsend

Alvin George Townsend, 94, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012.Alvin was born in White Plains, N.Y., was raised in Hartsdale, N.Y. He graduated from White Plains High School and Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Alvin was a veteran of World War II serving in the 99th Infantry, Checkerboard Division, in the U.S. Army during the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Nashua Corporation. Alvin was a former elder with Crystal River Presbyterian Church and is currently a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church. He served on the Board of Education and Lions Club in River Edge, New Jersey.Alvin is survived by his wife of 72 years, Alice Martin Townsend; sons, David Townsend and wife, Gale Fellowes MD, and Richard Townsend MD and wife, Margaret; grandchildren, Heidi Townsend MD and husband, Jeff Durdin, Erik Townsend and wife, Nuria Lopez, Andrew Townsend and wife, Emily and Amanda Redding MD and husband, John; great-grandchildren, Samuel and Jack Durdin and Sofia Townsend-Lopez. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.Graveside services for Alvin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors and Pastor Diane Stocker officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alvins name to Rivermont Presbyterian Church, 3319 Hixson Pike, Chattanooga, TN 37415.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
