Thelma Wallace

Thelma O. "Betty" Wallace, 84, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at a local hospital.She was born on Aug. 5, 1929. in South Carolina.She moved to Chattanooga at an early age. Betty was a graduate of Howard High School and worked as a beautician for over 40 years.She served as former president of the Chattanooga Cosmetology Association-Chapter 1. Betty was a devout member of Thompkins Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served as choir president for a number of years. She was also affiliated with several other organizations in various capacities.Thelma was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Jessie Key Jones; and her maternal grandparents, J.C. and Carrie Robinson Jones, as well as, several other relatives.She is survived by one daughter, Tawana (Darrell) Hinton; one grandson, Charles Hinton; two sisters, Gertrude McDonald and Liz Hester; devoted cousins, Richard and Catrice Walker; dear friend, Mary Ann Maffet; godchildren, Shun Ammons, Kevin Dillard, Karen Boyd, Janoleice Lawson, Riketta Woods, Valerie Kimball; and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary Ellen Locher Breast Cancer Foundation.Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at Thompkins Chapel AME Zion Church.Interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 6 7 p.m. this evening at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
