Doris McKaig

Doris Hixon McKaig, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013. She was born in Valley Head, Ala., and moved to Chattanooga during her high school senior year. She graduated from Tyner High School. Doris worked for the Head Start Program in Summitt for 16 years. She had a passion for serving others, expressed in her love of family and friends and faithful service to her church, Silverdale Baptist. She and her husband Bill McKaig were married at Silverdale Baptist Church in 1950, and worked side-by-side in various ministries throughout their married life. Doris was an active member of the Sunshine Class and the Primetimers Senior group at Silverdale Baptist Church. She and Bill participated in mission trips to Puerto Rico, and in her later years she visited the nursing homes and homebound in the community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hobert and Lottie Hixon; and a sister, Joyce Hixon Rose. Doris is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, William H. (Bill) McKaig, Jr.; son Dan (Lizette), of Hendersonville, Tenn.; daughter Wanda (Kevin Casey), of Ooltewah; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; brothers Ralph and Millard Hixon; and several nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, Dec. 23, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Silverdale Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends today, from 2-4 p.m. at the church. A private graveside service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Silverdale Baptist Missions Fund, 7236 Bonny Oaks Drive, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421 and to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37416.
