Ottis Penney

Ottis Dewey Penney, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013. He was born in Soddy, Tenn., on Jan. 12, 1920 to the late Charles King Penney and Edna Morgan Penney. Mr. Penney was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II. He return to Chattanooga, married his wife Agnes in 1948, and raised his family in Red Bank. He was active in Red Bank Methodist Church. He retired in 1978 from the United States Postal Inspection Service and moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., for 30 years before returning to Chattanooga. In Florida, he was active in the 1st Methodist Church of New Smyrna Beach. He was preceded in death by loving wife of 60 years, Agnes Purvis Penney; two brothers, Coster and Clifford; three sisters Vivian, Marie and Burley. Survivors include his son, Charles T. ( Sherry) Penney; grandchildren, Amanda B. Sherrill, Tommy (Donna) Penney; five great-grandchildren Mckayla Sherrill, Hannah Sherrill, Caitlyn Sherrill, Tanner Penney and Aubrey Penney. Thank you God for being so generous and loaning him to us for all these years and especially the last five years when he got to know and love his great-granddaughters Mckayla, Hannah and Caitlyn Sherrill. He has a special place in his heart for these girls just as they have a special place in theirs for grandpa as they call him. Thank you God for the many blessings you have given dad and his family. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. today, Dec. 30, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with military honors In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 519 E.
